Hefty is a good word for it, I agree (looks nice though)! I hope the neighbors realize how big this building is really going to be...
I'm really excited for the area east of McMaster to densify a bit more, get some commercial and with LRT, the pedestrian realm will be far nicer. This will be a really nice stretch of city in the future rather than its current urban arterial form currently.

Maybe a bit early, but what are we thinking of how this building looks so far? Personally I like the way it's looking, however it's already starting to look really big for this area lol.

It may be an "it's something" and we'll leave it at that. I'll be happy to be wrong!

Seeing it in person - the frontage facing Cline is strikingly bad. I'm not holding out too much hope for the tower portion.
I also think we need more housing stock, especially mid-rise. Most of that will be ugly, just as it has been for the past 60-70 years - just look at the towers in Durand along Bay, none of them are lookers. I'd argue the average modern build actually interacts with the streetscape better than those old blocks do.
The egregious thing about this build however, is that it's not tucked away on a secondary street. It's on the main throughway right next to one of the regions biggest university, and one of Hamilton's most important hubs. There's a somewhat organic hodgepodge of fine-grain retail stretching from Longwood to Osler that is dying for more care and attention, and I'm just not confident in this development delivering that. I hope to be wrong though!

Ideally we don't get ugly. But I would take ugly and more housing over no new housing 🤷🏻‍♂️ people are more important than aesthetic
..are they..?

We have plenty of people in this city, they just aren't all GOOD QUALITY people.

Quality over quantity extends to people, not just buildings. We need both. Let's not pretend we have to compromise, we don't. We CHOOSE to.

I mean there's lot of people I don't like, but I think we should ensure their human rights are respected. Seeing as how housing is a human right, I think we as a society are complacent in denying people in a first world country a basic human right, so I do think housing comes over aesthetics. I think many people would prefer any roof over their head, rather than none because it wasn't pretty enough.

The aesthetics of this project may be in question by the looks of it... but one thing this development is doing right is providing a BIG variety of units, which will tailor to a lot of different demographics of people. One of the few buildings of this size I've seen that is not cookie cutter for the most part, I think there is like 70 or 80 styles of units here?? All ranging from a little studio all the way up to 3 bed 2 bath and over 1000sqft. This will help give people who aren't students some options other that a rental in a century home with 5 other people.

SRM and the City of Hamilton are trying to do something with those triangular balconies though... wonder how that's going to turn out, might look a bit tacky.

Aesthetics aside, I agree. This type of housing is badly needed in the area (unlike downtown where this type of housing is common). Additionally the plethora of commercial units is great for the street and may make it feel less intimidating once LRT is also installed.

I don't know about quality of people, but Hamilton desperately needs more high-paying employers to contribute to both the tax base and the jobs base. We seem to be severely lacking.
