I have a set of different events/meetings next week in San Francisco (March 4th -- 7th)... on my free time I hope to take some pictures of City-defining infill projects that I can share when I return from the trip. San-Fran is one of my favorite Cities.

I did get a few pictures and one of my client's recently upgraded Painted Lady. Also got referred to the owners of the Cannery, a San Francisco Landmark. At the meeting we got into a deep discussion about modern-day retail and its various challenges. The family wants me to put a proposal together for the Cannery (which presently is largely vacant) to look specifically at Retail solutions. Exciting! I will post pictures at some point later; now back to current projects.

In the past, I've put up photos from Berlin, Leipzig, and Dresden, all of which are lovely, fascinating cities. A few weeks ago, I had the chance to go to Freiburg for the first time, and I wanted to share some photos. The city is about 350K in the city proper, and has a nice network of trams that reach all of its major districts, although I didn't use them much. I did, however, walk a lot, and I think it's a great example of a city that has gone above and beyond to create pedestrian- and bike-friendly streetscapes. Besides that, it's just an adorable city! And like so many German university cities, it has a cultural life that's much greater than its size would suggest. So with that said, please enjoy my vacation (not actually a vacation) photos.

I'm back in Montreal for a week and I had a chance to take the new REM branch out into West Island, just a day or two after it opened. Here are some photos:

Ticket machines, fare gates, and platform at station McGill:

Big build-out going on near station Bois-Franc in Ville St-Laurent. I think all stations from du Ruisseau on have a large park-and-ride.

Terminus Anse-à-l'Orme, including the exits, an outside view of the station, and a broader view of the nearby bike paths and bus terminal.

^^ no, no, no. Other cities have it wrong according to some on this thread and reddit, Fare gates are evil and other cities that have them have no idea what they're doing /s

Speaking of fare gates, I was recently in Seattle and had the chance to take the Link light rail and buses. I was surprised to see that not only do they not have fare gates in the light rail stations, they don't even check fare payment by default on the buses. I generally had good experiences and didn't really notice much disorder, although I didn't take them enough to feel confident that my experience was representative.
