Good CBC summary story

Canadian submariner: "There's no rust". Bonus!

The operational differences are over my head, and I realize there are other considerations at stake, but I favour the Korean boat. The 11th-hour bumping of German-Norwegian order book seems desperate, and I think we need more strategic alliances in the Pacific.

Plus the Koreans are developing a nuclear powered variant, which Canada may want in the 2050s.

Nuclear certainly offers a step-up capability. But potentially eyewatering financial commitment, technical challenges and a long-term political investment that is unlikely to be forthcoming. Watch AUKUS for lessons. That said, does anyone remember the high-profile but brief speculation on nuke subs in the 80s? Canada-class submarine.

Notwithstanding capabilities, alliances and industrial offsets - I hope we have a good plan to grow a submarine force with the requisite size, skills and experience to man these boats. Growing the force will take decades, and skilled personnel will always be exposed to any number of risks: pressures elsewhere in RCN, CF personnel cuts, and poaching from industry/allies, etc.

Why do you think we got the massive pay raise last year?

They need every one of us old timers in to stay in and help grow the force.

Also, I don't think people fully understand what is coming. There are capabilities like Space which are literally 10x'ing. And between the sensors and shooters coming online the CAF is growing a theatre level layered multi-domain deep sense-strike complex with a minimum of range of 300 km to a few thousand. All within 10-15 years. This is hard to fully grasp for even most over 45 in the CAF. Let alone the general public. It's capabilities that are more in line with powers like the UK minus the nukes.

According to my (very happy) brother-in-law, it was the quickest way to spend in-year money. I'm not that cynical...

Financial duct tape alone will not provide the skilled, qualified and experienced personnel required in, say, 15 years. $ is an important factor, but part of the wider CF package.

We are looking to triple the size of the submarine force, so we need to think big, wide and long-term. Across the pond, manning the RN carrier fleet is causing issues across the escort fleet. Need to avoid robbing Peter, etc.

Absolutely. Integration with a rapidly evolving targeting cycle/OODA loop/recce-strike complex is a crucial concept/doctrine that needs to start now and coheres across all procurement decisions.

Your BiL must have been blind to all the releases happening around him. The pay raise absolutely did help stem the bleeding. And yes, helped meet spending requirements too.

Nobody said it did. But to have a larger force in a decade you need experienced folks to train the recruits and induct the new kit. The pay raise was specifically designed to give more experienced personnel and those in training positions larger bonuses. For an NCO at a training school, the instructor bonus is several thousand dollars a year on top of other allowances like field pay. It's actually getting lucrative to go teach at a schoolhouse.
