I noticed a new Starbucks in construction on Bay Street across from the new pedestrianized Temperance Street. It’ll do well with the office workers there.

Its been under construction for a while - but now the permits are posted.

I wonder if this is opening (to cover the area) if the Starbucks inside the Hudson Bay by Queen Subway closes for the near by workers? or is it staying open...

I peeked into it recently and there was a lot of work left to do. I can’t find it anywhere on Starbucks site or references to stores coming soon but I imagine it’ll be open by the Summer.

Edit: I guess once they got their permit, they sped along. I peeked inside and it looked finished, hung pictures on the wall and everything.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. That micro Starbucks in the Bay serves Adelaide Centre via the PATH. It’s not long for this world. And good riddance, I’ve often found it closed or under supplied and there is a much nicer Starbucks just 30 seconds away into the Eaton Centre.

Starbucks to close more North American stores. Also the second round of layoffs in just over a year.

Considering how many of their pre-pandemic stores have closed in the core, I wonder how much cutting they can do in downtown (positive: at the cusp of RTO; negative: is this the economy for an $8 drink so complicated that you will need to write it down in an instruction manual). Also the late Millennial/Gen Z crowd seem to be more willing to spend money on boba than fancy coffee.

The projected reduction in store count is ~1% That won't be evenly applied, of course as some regions will be doing better than others, but it would work out to single store closure in the central core of the City. (when averaged)

There are ~150 locations in Toronto so its only 1-2 locations for the whole City (again, averaged)

With apologies to those who will lose their jobs this is not a coffee chain I have ever liked. From their ambiance (or lack of) to their mediocre coffee to baked goods/food program that's barely at Tim's level with a much smaller selections.......not my thing.

I don't care for Tim's either.

Both chains are exemplars of real estate + marketing trumps Quality and Value.

Starbucks isn't going anywhere though. Its just addressing a bit of saturation, some low performing locations and of course doing a bit of union busting while at it.

If they don't KFC themselves into the ground, they'll be growing again by Q3 2026.

Is there no Starbucks Canada? You'd think they would want to wait until five-days-in-office returns before getting a full lay of where they're at, but if they're going to cut they're going to cut.

I don't think Toronto is reducing Starbucks locations, at least not downtown. If anything, new ones have started opening. A big one just opened on Bay Street not far from the tiny one in The Bay's basement that closed. But 2 of them opened at Eaton Centre, replacing one by the fountain. There was a time when I was surprised to see Starbucks closing left and right, but they've started growing again.

I'm with you though, I'm not often in the mood to spend $8 on a latte and twisting my nose at the baked goods in the display. There are far nicer coffee houses around the city with better coffee, better bakery and better atmosphere.

Suit yourself. I want my 20 shot espresso.

Looks like you can use the app - to check location hours - if they are listed CLOSED CLOSED CLOSED starting Monday - its gone.

From my quick glance - looks like the Commerce Court Pickup is closing.

Also two out in Etobicoke (one at Kipling/Evans which makes sense given they opened a DT location at Evans/Islington) plus the one off Lakeshore near long branch are closing.

Monarch Park and 1 Yorkville are closing.

The closures must have been abrupt as they both show as closing at 430.

Monarch Park surprises me a bit. It's usually slammed during the day with all the schools nearby.

1 Yorkville is also surprising given how new that store is. Mind you it is pickup only.

Yes, that is quite surprising. With the Jones/Danforth location gone from the last mass closure, there is now no Starbucks on the Danforth east of Carlaw.

My money is on the Monarch Park location being converted to a Tims.

There is a unionized location at Pape and Danforth which oddly enough I'm walking to now as I type this.

This was my default location when I lived on the Danforth (and before I started boycotting them) but it was a bit of a hike. This location is seemingly always busy, probably because it's the only starbs for miles in that part of town

Again.. oddly enough.

Someone ordered 30 drinks earlier via Uber when I was there. Hot and cold.
