For the first time ever, I actually laughed at an Adma reference. 1 for 200, I guess.

2 weeks later I get a response...

On behalf of the Honourable Bill Graham, thank you for your email concerning the importance of the city of Toronto and the province of Ontario. Please be assured that your email has been reviewed and that a response from the Minister will be forthcoming. Thank you again for taking the time to write to share your views.

Sincerely,

I think it is pretty shocking that the Star is coming out against the Liberals. That leaves them in a bit of a bind, who can they support federally? They have way to heavy a left-wing, populist bias to support the Conservatives. But the NDP are still, rightly, seen as too whacko to actually govern by the majority of the populace. Interesting.
Also, I am surprised that there is a strong sentiment that only the NDP will be able to give Ontario what they ask for. I didnt know we were all asking for a more, better paid government workers, higher taxes and a reduced economy.

It is simplistic to say that this is what the NDP stands for these days, and it's simplistic to say that this is what would happen.

Ed, did you write him a letter too or just send him the editorial?

re: Graham's response to Ed.

You know we're heading into elections when they start responding to emails.

The NDP environmental policy is usually about as good as the Greens, Jack Layton is the most committed leader when it comes to cities and taxes won't being going through the roof.

And I'm not sure where everyone thinks that the NDP will tax and spend out way to the third world. Is this from Bob Rae's government? People conveniently forget the deficit started to decline towards the end of Bob Rae's term. Not only that, but Toronto was getting two new subway lines, and nurses, teachers and other government workers weren't getting laid off by the thousands.

NDP governments do a fine job of balancing the budget in SK and MB. Of course, people still have the Rae years firmly on their radars in these parts (and with good reason). However, those years sort of marked the end of free-spending by senior levels of gov't. It was also during a period of huge contraction in the econony (which generally forces more gov't spending).

In fact, much of what got Rae in trouble was for trying to reign in the spending (ie. cancelling the Opera House, Rae Days, etc.). I don't think the Ontario NDP of today would necessarily be the same, nor does any of their literature suggest they would.

My letter to Graham

Subject Line: With Friends Like These: Toronto Star Editorial

Dear Mr Graham,

Suffice it to say this editorial sums up my feelings towards what the Liberal Party of Canada is doing for the citizens of Toronto and Ontario. Expect to lose my family's two votes in the next election if the Liberal Party continues to ignore Toronto's needs. Hope the extra votes in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia were worth it.

Sincerely,
A former loyal Liberal supporter that's just about had it.

The NDP environmental policy got endorsed by more major groups, such as Greenpeace and the Sierra Club, than did the Green Party. (IIRC)

I too am confused by the sweeping generalisations about the NDP. Their actions in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and even in our own city of Toronto proves that they are hardly looking to tax and spend and scare away businesses. Lorne Nystrom, who I believe was their finance critic, likes to quote the line "If the public will trust you with the purse strings, they will trust you at the polls".

Good letter, Ed... short and to the point. This is a good time to scare the Liberals and let them know of our displeasure... I'm going to write a similar letter.

To play-act (and only play-act) a right-wing message-board troll for a sec, here are the 2004 election results:

Regina—Qu'Appelle
Andrew Scheer Conservative 10 012 35.8
Lorne Edmund Nystrom ** N.D.P. 9 151 32.7
Allyce Herle Liberal 7 793 27.8
Deanna Robilliard Green Party 639 2.3
Mary Sylvia Nelson Christian Heritage Party 293 1.0
Lorne Edward Widger No Affiliation 106 0.4
