I love that they are identifying that Victoria Golf Course is not the best use of the space. Would make an amazing companion park to Hawerlak but connected directly to downtown.

Yes please to daylighting rat creek. Would be in favor of some more development in that ravine just to help encourage use beyond just encampments.

That description of the public view of the gondola is pretty accurate. I was shocked how divisive it was, some people passionately opposed and others super excited.

Is that what they said? Looks like participants expressed concern but I’m not sure we should take that away. It’s a nice little gem in the city that seems to get a ton of use.

It's an amazing public asset for recreation including, but not limited to golf right now.

I golf in summer, x-ski in winter, skate, have snow-shoed, picnicked, tobogganed.

Golf is often very expensive and quite a social sport for many, especially seniors; this course has a lot of value for recreation as is.

As a park, the Victoria Golf Course would instantly be one of the key draws in the city - akin to the Halifax Public Garden or Regina's Wascana Park.

I think it's an absolute shame that the best parkland in the city is a ticketed space most of the year. And while Edmonton goes down one municipal golf course, I don't believe that this is the best use of the land - not by a long shot.

I walk the Leg grounds on a regular basis and they are far from busy 95% of the time, manicured and well connected by transit.

Victoria is quite hard to get a tee-time actually, used from 630am-9pm and a very social space for a wide variety of incomes, backgrounds, men, women, kids, seniors and is beloved.

There are hundreds of parks that rarely get used.

2 of them public, accessible, affordable and getting tons of use by youth, seniors, families, etc. This being one of the major ones.
For the amount of prime land they use, one would be sufficient. I am not advocating for no golf courses, we just don't need as many. Kinsmen is a family friendly and affordable course even if not publicly owned. Victoria is a very low density use of river valley space directly adjacent to downtown. That land would be better used as park space to take pressure off Hawerlak. We could even keep the driving range.

For the record, I know this is an unpopular opinion. But I think arguments for "best use and "maximum community benefit" that promote urbanism to replace "keeping things the same" apply just as much to the use of our river valley space.

Totally agree that the private clubs should not be allowed in the river valley - Windermere, Edmonton G&GC, Mayfair and Highlands.
Windermere bought their land in the middle of nowhere like 60 years ago and Edmonton G&CC is top of bank and also owns their land so I don’t think they belong in this chat. The Mayfair deal is not my favourite though as they should be paying full on market rates for that land. It’s sweetheart deal. That said you can say it’s part of having an attractive city to have a premier private club in that location.

Back to the public courses, I’d love to see the actual data inon things but I think it’s getting great utilization compared to some other park spaces that don’t get used much. Our river valley can be a number of things at once, and serving golfers is just as important as other uses,

Not ok to have a city to celebrate success as much as community? Great cities have places and spaces for many different types of folks, incomes, etc.

Do we revoke all titles of those who have houses in the valley?

Was going to say this.

Options are good for everyone. Just because some aren't a golfer doesn't mean we should take golf courses out because they're not a fan.

Victoria golf course is booked up usually and the driving range is probably the most profitable in the city (mill woods might give it a run for its money). The course is highly used, I don’t know what metrics you’re using to say it’s not a good use of land.

Until we build out downtown and rossdale more, and until the legislature grounds, Hawrelak, kinsmen, Emily Murphy, and Louise mckinney are consistently seeing high usage, there’s no point adding even more park space.

I get the golf course hate in principle. But it’s not worth attacking now. If we were Vancouver and Victoria golf course was in false creek, sure. Take it back for development or green space. But we have so much land that’s barely used even in peak months. Let’s focus on other areas.
