The only sure way to avoid ICE is to self deport. You’re squatting in someone else’s country, and eventually that’s going to come home to roost. If today I flew to Japan as a tourist on a 6 month stay as permitted, and then did not leave, I would expect Japan to eventually find and deport me. How did an estimated eleven million foreigners residing illegally in the US never think this day would come for them? And it’s not going to get better after Trump is gone, as he’s not an aberration, but is the new American mindset.

True, and good point. I suppose I’d want to ask the BIPOC and especially LATAM citizens of the US why they voted for Trump in such huge numbers, or didn’t vote at all, thus ensuring Trump’s win. If I were a brown American I’d make sure I had my US passport on me at all times. When the agents of US fascism ask you for “papers”, you’d best be ready. Insane, but this is the America the majority of American voters choose either through their votes or their abstaining.

This. The left thought that Obama being elected would be "change", that society would transform overnight. But rarely does government work that way when you are bound by rules, and it made a lot of progressives disillusioned with the party and with politics.

Obama was the Deporter in Chief, removing over 3 million people over his two terms. Obama bailed out Wall Street and failed to prosecute major bankers for the 2008 financial crisis. Rather than establishing a public, universal healthcare system, Obama preserved the private insurance industry. And, despite growing inequality, Obama never pushed for wealth taxes or significant redistribution. Obama was no leftie.

…and the problem with the whataboutism here is that one is comparing something more legitimate to something completely illegal. We might as well be comparing the consumption of alcohol at a family gathering to smuggling cocaine at this point.
