President Trump said he plans to go out on patrol with the Metropolitan Police Department and National Guard troops around Washington, D.C., on Thursday night amid a federal crackdown on crime.
An unfortunate accident or an exchange with friendly fire might be might be welcoming here...

I’d support a national biometric-verified identity document for all citizens. I’ve nothing to hide.

We have that in Hungary. As a citizen I had to get fingerprinted and my signature placed on file to get my national ID card.

It's not a drivers license but it acts more like a Ontario Photo Card.

There is some merit in a government ID card to access government services, benefits, etc. There is some difficulty when it is applied to a regulated activity, such as driving, that you have to qualify for; although that could probably be technically worked out. One problem is our national/subnational division.

The existence of an identity card isn't the main issue. The circumstances under which the State can demand it be produced, is. We don't want a 'your papers please' society; although it seems the US isn't far off it.

It is rare they ask for ID cards here, where down there it's much more on demand. It's the difference between respecting that we're are a free country versus one that's choosing not to be.

I think in Hungary's case it's a holdover from the Communist times.

It's actually the law there that people must have ID on them at all times.

People or the government can 'ask' for pretty much anything. There are very limited circumstances, and they depend on the particular card and the circumstances, where production is mandatory.

(Emphasis mine)

...you and I are saying the same thing here. I'm just saying on the US side of things they may not be so limiting anymore. And to put that mildly.
