In a news release, the White House praised Mr. Nunes for his role in attempting to discredit investigations of the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russia, calling him “a public servant of unmatched talent, unassailable integrity, and unwavering resolve.”
In a 2019 report, special counsel Robert Mueller confirmed that Moscow interfered in the 2016 election and detailed contacts between the Russian operatives and members of the Trump campaign, but said the evidence didn’t establish a conspiracy or coordination between the two.
As chairman of the House Intelligence Committee in 2017,
Mr. Nunes oversaw the House panel’s Russia probe, but drew criticism from Democrats, who accused him of providing political cover to the Trump administration rather than leading a serious, independent inquiry.
Mr. Trump also plans to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Rep. Jim Jordan, (R., Ohio), according to people familiar with his plans.
During a 2018 interview with “Fox & Friends,” Mr. Trump said Mr. Nunes should get the medal, calling them “high awards for civilians, and he’s done amazing.”
Considered one of the nation’s highest civilian honors, the medal is awarded to people “who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” It was established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy.
In December, Mr. Trump awarded the medal to retired Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz and Iowa wrestling icon Dan Gable.
