News release: Province Introducing Legislation to Build Homes and Infrastructure Faster

This is a very wide-ranging omnibus bill; I have worked on the French version of some aspects of it. Tenants will not be happy about it, among others. Security of tenure might be affected. Edit: The bill has yet to be posted on the Legislative Assembly website.

"Lease Agreement Expiry :
Under the RTA, all tenants have "security of tenure", which means that tenants have a right to remain in their rental unit as long as they follow the lease agreement and the RTA. Landlords cannot evict tenants without a legally valid reason, and after a fixed-term lease ends, the tenancy typically continues on a month-to-month basis.
The government would consult on alternative options on lease agreement expiry that could allow landlords to control who occupies their units and for how long, allowing them to adjust tenancy arrangements based on market conditions, personal needs, or business strategies. This could add flexibility for some landlords in the approach to leases, potentially unlocking additional rental unit stock."

It also doubles down on the anti-cyclist culture war.

• Fully prohibiting all municipalities from reducing the number of motor vehicle lanes when installing new bicycle lanes.
• Regulation-making authority will also enable the Minister of Transportation to prescribe additional activities and provide exemptions.

There’s a lot of really awful things being stuffed into this bill.

I'd love to see cities remove sidewalks to put in bike lanes just to stick it to Doug.

They said they can't remove vehicle lanes but they said nothing about sidewalks.

How would this be sticking it to him??? He doesn't strike me as the type to choose walking when driving is on the table...

Congratulations Dougie for wasting 75 million dollars on these ads... gonna go yell at Trump like a 800 pound gorilla?

Strange statement by the Reagan Foundation. Those were Reagan's actual words. I doubt that Ontario needed to get permission to use this recording. The funny thing is, using Reagan's words was not a great choice to begin with because Trump has never been a fan of Reagan's trade and immigration (amnesty program). Reagan's words don't resonate with the MAGA crowd, only with establishment Republicans (GOPe), who don't need to be convinced that free trade with Canada is a good thing. Amazing how out of touch Ford and his advisors are with the political scene in the US.

I actually sent Ford an email early this week, suggesting that he replace the Reagan ad with something more impactful, and I sketched out a storyline for an ad that Ford would narrate. It would start with a video montage of Trump complaining about Canadian cars, saying, "I don't want Canadian cars." "The problem with Canada is they want a car plant, and we want a car plant." The montage would conclude with loudmouth Howard Lutnick blurting out, "Why are we building cars in Canada?". Next, the ad would cut to Ford standing on the Ambassador Bridge with the Detroit skyline in the background and Ford intoning, "Why do we build cars in Canada? I'll tell you why, we build cars in Canada, Secretary Lutnick". Ford would go on to list how Canada is the largest export market for US cars and how the US has a trade surplus with Canada on cars, concluding with Ford saying, "President Trump, if you don't buy our cars, we won't buy your cars, it's as simple as that."

EDIT:

I have to take back my criticism of the Reagan ad. It worked in getting under Trump's skin, and thanks to Trump's response, the ad is being tweeted all over X tonight - the "Streisand effect".

3+ more years of this... hoping dor the PC to get wiped off the map in 2029. The coward will likely not run again and let the remaining PC MPPs get slaughtered come election day

These guys are also backing Trump by gaslighting something away that Reagan actually said though...

...while I am all for asking Dougie to give account for the stupid, stupidity seems to be burning at all ends here. That is, it's far from normal to throw out trade negotiations over some mad king's perception of what someone historically said. So let's start with that.

What's going to be the issue that causes the people of Ontario to finally push back against Ford? There have been so many dodgy bills and scandals that just sail on by without a peep from anyone but key groups. Is it going to be him trying to remove the security of tenancy, ending all rent control? It will be an absolute disaster if this happens.
