People do that all the time with retirement. A lot of places require you to give six months notice of your intended retirement. It is also pretty common to tell your company you're thinking of retiring so they can work on a succession plan.

What's funnier here is that everyone knew since last summer that Trudeau was going to retire, he just refused to admit it until it was too late to do any good succession planning.

FWIW I gave 6+ months notice and then, at my boss's request, stayed around for several months part-time to ease the transition. Unfortunately, my successor was not a good fit so things unraveled within a couple of years but ....

The concept of succession planning in the political world is not far off the Mafia's.

Depending on the type of company and position held, particularly if it is leadership, an extended departure can sometimes lead to a lame-duck situation.

I remember one guy who went into the office on the weekend, left his employer-issued items on the desk and a dry cleaning chit for the employer-issued clothing and a note that said 'I'm done'.

In the same conference, the premier hinted that they will be reducing tolls on the 407...expect an annoucement soon...
