Re: Northwestern Ontario...the New Province of Mantario? (Gl

...and who is paying for this subway car project?

Is Ontario subsidizing the entire subway car purchase, or are you suggesting that general money granted for capital expenses to transit agencies pays for Bombardier subway cars?

I recall McGuinty saying it's up to the TTC who they buy their subway cars from. If Ontario was serious about ensuring that the TTC would buy Bombardier subway cars, they'd specifically allocate additional money to the TTC that would cover any expected gap between a Bombardier order and a cheaper order.

I also recall the Rae government heavily subsidized the purchase of OBI/Orion shitboxes (though it wasn't mandatory - some agencies such as Kitchener Transit, which continued to buy NFI, didn't participate).

Again, the TTC is still woefully underfunded, and though it seems harsh, as a public agency needs to find the best value for its money. It is only in the business of operating a transit system. I wouldn't mind some of my taxes being used to help subsidize this, I'm just arguing which level should be picking up the tab.

Re: Northwestern Ontario...the New Province of Mantario? (Gl

No, Ontario and the Federal Government are paying for it.

Kitchener Transit bought some Orions.

Re: Northwestern Ontario...the New Province of Mantario? (Gl

You can get American satellite TV and there is at least one national bank headquartered outside of TO (in Calgary, no?). There are also credit unions...

Re: Northwestern Ontario...the New Province of Mantario? (Gl

I propose a new province called Torontario, with Toronto its designated capital.

Re: Northwestern Ontario...the New Province of Mantario? (Gl

Just rename Ontario, then?

The former is illegal, and all of the big five banks which make up the overwhelming majority of the Canadian consumer banking market have their executive offices in Toronto.

Re: Northwestern Ontario...the New Province of Mantario? (Gl

Still doesn't mean they have to use the big five. National & Laurentian are based in Quebec, HSBC is based in Vancouver etc. Then there are banks such as ING. They have choices.

Re: Northwestern Ontario...the New Province of Mantario? (Gl

Doesn't ING have their Canadian office in Toronto?

Nothing forced Ontarians to watch Toronto television. They may have access to Toronto television as part of their service, but there are other channels which they can watch that are not based in Toronto. It's the same argument as with banks; while Toronto may dominate the market, Toronto businesses do not have a monopoly.

An analogous situation for the TTC buying Thunder Bay subway cars is that the TTC would be required to consider bids from that facility, but permitted to tender and consider bids from other manufacturers.

Re: Northwestern Ontario...the New Province of Mantario? (Gl

CrapWest Global's in Winnipeg, the largest newspaper chain and the second largest private television network. And yes, there's Canadian Western Bank, National Bank, Desjardins and the other credit unions and caisses populares.

CrapWest Global's in Winnipeg, the largest newspaper chain

Hardly a factor in the land of the Toronto Red Star.

Re: Northwestern Ontario...the New Province of Mantario? (Gl

What does that even mean?

Re: Northwestern Ontario...the New Province of Mantario? (Gl

Why complain about the "Red Star" - there's three other dalies with more right-wing viewpoints, from the Toronto Sun (another example of a non-Toronto media owned outlet - it's owned by Quebecor), to the Globe and Mail, and the National Post.

There. One centre-left paper versus three centre-right (Globe and Mail) and right wing papers. Or read Maclean's, now with a sudden right-wing bent with Ken Whyte in charge. You have a choice, the Star's not exactly Pravda.

Re: Northwestern Ontario...the New Province of Mantario? (Gl

We'd have to get the birth and marriage certificate office back from TB if they left for Manitoba - maybe it wouldn't take months to get one then!

Re: Northwestern Ontario...the New Province of Mantario? (Gl

There's a fifteen day guarantee. You can order them online, and if they don't arrive on time, you get your money back. Mine just got Purolatored to me.
