Close enough!

So the unofficial party party, Working Families Edmonton gets 8 candidates in. If this council holds to what they did last term, we will kind of hold a status quo and not really be different. Hopefully I am wrong. I do want to attract business and head offices and more opportunities for everyone.

Isn't that a PAC?

I am optimistic for this council (might as well be). I am happy that Knack has won (though I would have been happy with Walters, too).

Knack will have a council made up of a majority of members who support the agenda and priorities he campaigned on and I don't think he needs to have a full council on board with almost everything he advocates for.

Looks like Darrell Friesen and Reed Clarke will bring some business/investment attraction focus to council and I'd like to see Principe put more of her focus and attention to that, too, and get beyond bike lanes this next 4 years. I mean her campaign had 3 main points - I voted against this and this and this. Maybe she can lead the charge to champion something like Salvador did with derelict housing, as an example. Paquette has some good ideas and maybe she can work constructively with him on something.

I think having Morgan in place of Rice is a big win and will also help council operate more effectively and efficiently - but all incumbents should hopefully move in that direction.

Elliott will also bring another perspective to council and unlike Cartmell, I think Knack is much better suited to work well with all members of council and set the tone for respect and collaboration.

All said, I wouldn't be surprised to see Principe leave for a UCP campaign as she attempted last term federally.

As it is getting to the point where everyone is reasonably comfortable with who will sit on our incoming council, I would like to extend my congratulations to all of those who were successful in their campaigns.

The one caveat I would attach to that is that your campaigns are now over and once your terms commence each and every one of you represents everyone in the city and everyone in your respective wards, not just those who campaigned with you or who voted for you and I hope that you can individually and collectively govern from that perspective.

I would also like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone else who ran in this election and who was not successful in their campaign. It is too easy to think that democracy depends on those who ran and were elected doing the job they were elected to. In fact, democracy depends on those individuals who ran and who were not elected because without the gift of choice each one of them gave us there would be no democracy.

I think the larger number of incumbents compared to last term will help; it makes a world of difference when the majority of councillors know what to expect come budget time. The supplementary budget adjustment this fall is one thing; the four-year budget deliberations in year 2 are another beast altogether. The decisions made when making a fresh four-year budget are among the strongest determinants of a council's success or failure since that is really where they make 90% of their spending decisions. There's a reason a few councillors this term said over the last few months "If we knew then what we do now..." And now they do know, and they can give it another crack with four years' experience under their belts :)

Congratulations, Mayor Knack! Also, congratulations to the incumbents on City Council!

These results prove once again that polls don't mean jack shit.

Just 6 votes separate Daryl Friesen and Thu Parmar. I hope Thu wins the recount, but mainly because she's an independent candidate.

I'm greatly enjoying Jennifer Rice losing her seat to Jon Morgan. Good riddance to that bitch!

Overall, this election is a big hearty EFF YOU to Premier Marlaina and her UCP clown car for their attempt at introducing party politics into municipal elections. Not sure if the rest of the province has followed suit though.

Once these UCP dimwits are voted out in the next provincial election, I hope the voting process is brought back to the 21st century.

Why is the vote count taking so bloody long? Not enough volunteers? Incompetency?

The incumbent advantage is really strong at the ward level, even Jennifer Rice isn't losing that badly right now. I thought there might be more dissatisfaction with the prior council but that assertion appears to be wrong. Hope for the best and that the group can navigate some real challenges.
Yes, I also thought that. However I do feel when incumbents get into the low 40%'s it can be a bit of a danger zone or warning for their political future they should heed if they are smart. I suppose there is also a sense of relief for many of them, as that dissatisfaction was becoming quite concerning.

It hasn't been an easy last few years with lots of new councilors in the last election, COVID with all the fall out from that and an adversarial provincial government, so perhaps voters took all that into account and were more understanding than expected. I don't feel it will get easier, but hopefully with more experience now and a lot of feedback from the voters they will be able to deal with things better.
