Cartmell diagnosis for the problem with Edmonton’s downtown: not enough parking.
Open drug use is already banned under the Controlled Substances and Drug Act. The police have the power to confiscate, arrest, detain, and charge people for open drug use.Is banning open drug use being talked about in Edmonton by any of the candidates or is it already banned but just not enforced?
Maybe I missed hearing about it, but I had no idea this was happening and probably would have went if I did. However, it sounds like there was a good discussion and questions related various downtown issues.Journal reporting less than 100 in attendance - maybe not a great turnout from our dt business community for an EDBA event? (Especially since some in attendance were probably officials from each campaign).
I read there was discussion about city centre mall. Did EDBA moderate and ask about the 101st empty site from our favorite developer and how much longer it's going to be left in a state of rubble?

While I don't agree with everything said, I do agree the current council has not done a very good job in dealing with the problems or trying to improve and promote downtown.

I'd like fries with my nothing burger.Anand Pye for Ward O-day'min's 5 Priorities: https://www.anandpye.ca/priorities
Hardcore for the Core
Your taxes should help maintain and beautify our communities, not fund vanity projects in the suburbs. Anand will be a strong voice for:
- Improving core infrastructure and amenities in core communities
- Better coordinated construction to reduce disruptions
- Reliable, responsive maintenance you can count on
- Building more housing downtown and around transit.
Safer Communities
You deserve to feel safe where you live. In our communities, Anand will create:
- More visible community policing to stop issues before they start
- Partnerships with social services to support people in crisis
- Higher standards for our public spaces and transit
- More funding for traffic calming measures on neighbourhood roads and near school.
Solutions for Homelessness
We need bold action to support Edmontonians experiencing homelessness. Anand will use his development and government relations experience to:
- Leverage City land to build more affordable and permanent supportive housing
- Supercharge partnerships with non-profits and other levels of government to get things built
Smarter Infill
Responsible growth starts with respecting neighbourhood concerns. As your City Councillor, Anand will:
- Mandate reasonable building sizes and fewer units mid-block
- Explore solutions for parking challenges
- Prioritize infill on corner lots
A City of Opportunity
Edmonton is a city of innovators and builders. Anand will make the City a partner, not a hindrance, for entrepreneurs and local businesses by:
- Keeping our City clean, safe, and well-maintained
- Investing in public spaces and creating great experiences in our core business districts
- Growing our tourism, arts, and culture sectors, because a vibrant city attracts visitors, talent, and investment that help local businesses thrive
- Supporting business growth by investing in lightning-fast permitting, reliable transit and transportation access, and partnership with our universities.
As good a pivot as one could make here, but the province would never grant municipalities the ability to withhold their money. His follow up response is about changing the model ie. push for changes in the MGA.
Well they may not be independent, but if they are collecting it they do have some control over remitting it. I remember years ago Ed Tel got into a dispute with AGT and threatened to with hold long distance revenues and eventually won the essentially municipal vs. province political battle they precipitated. So it is more complicated than that.Heavy media push against Walters from Cartmell, apparently Walters claimed the City could withhold "education" tax at the municipal level. Yet another case of why electing representatives with a cursory understanding of the MGA is important.
Municipal governments are not independent entities.
