Revitalizing Mary Burlie Park: A Community-First Approach to Urban Design
Public spaces have the power to bring people together, reflect community identity, and create opportunities for connection. The renewal of Mary Burlie Park in downtown Edmonton is a project that embodies all these values, honouring the legacy of Mary Burlie, a dedicated community leader known for her advocacy and care for those in need.
Public City is proud to lead the design for this transformation, reimagining the park as a safe, inclusive, and vibrant space that better serves the surrounding communities of Boyle Street, McCauley, and Chinatown.
A Park Designed for the Community:
The new design is informed by extensive community engagement and best practices in urban design, accessibility, and safety. Some key features include:

Mary’s Window – Inspired by Mary Burlie’s habit of watching over her neighborhood from her kitchen window, this feature will serve as both a symbol of her legacy and a practical water bottle filling station for those who need it.

Safer & More Accessible Design – Enhanced lighting, clear sightlines, and barrier-free pathways will improve safety and usability for all park visitors.

Active & Gathering Spaces – A half-court basketball area, table tennis, a new shade structure, and a fire pit will provide flexible spaces for both everyday use and community events.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) – Thoughtful design choices, including visibility improvements and well-defined pathways, will help create a park that is welcoming for all.
A Meaningful Transformation:
Mary Burlie Park is more than just an open space—it is a reflection of the resilience and care that Mary herself embodied. By transforming the park into a more functional, connected, and safe community hub, we are ensuring that her legacy lives on in a space that welcomes, supports, and uplifts the people of Edmonton.
We look forward to seeing this vision come to life and becoming a space that the community can take pride in for years to come.
