A scheduled power outage is planned for a sizable stretch of downtown Toronto near this weekend, though only certain residential and commecial buildings in the area will be impacted.
Toronto Hydro has scheduled an outage that will run from 11 p.m. on Saturday until 11 a.m. on Sunday, the utility
says on its website.
The outage is being carried out to accommodate equipment replacement work by Hydro One and will affect “select residential and commercial buildings” in the area of Queen Street West south to Front Street and Bathurst Street east to Bay Street, according to Toronto Hydro.
Power to the select buildings will be completely shut off during the maintenance period, the utility said in an email to customers, while advising people to plan ahead if they rely on any medical or powered devices.
Common elevators will be grounded and locked prior to the outage, Toronto Hydro said. The utility cautioned people to avoid using elevators near the scheduled outage time to avoid getting trapped.
The company also suggested charging mobile devices along with any electric vehicles prior to the power outage, and to ensure electric cooktop, stove and other sensitive equipment are turned off before the outage begins.
Toronto police spokesperson Ashley Visser couldn’t say in an email whether traffic lights in the area would be operating during the outage. She reminded drivers that if the lights aren’t operating, they should treat those intersections as four-way stops and use extra caution when proceeding through the intersections.
“We know power outages can be disruptive and we appreciate your patience and understanding while crews complete this vital work to maintain reliable service,” Toronto Hydro says online.
