I texted transit watch a few times this week but oof the amount of public drug use and general mess in the 102 Ave Valley Line stop is up there. Not sure if because it’s just spring weather so people are out in the open.

It’s because we allow it to happen at LRT stops without consequences. No real enforcement so why wouldn’t it happen?

I’d be inclined to agree if it wasn’t that I’ve seen enforcement many times when I’m regularly riding transit. I’m just curious if TPOs go in patrols or there’s hotspots that they stick to and how much they have on their plate.

Yeah I just mean, unless we put some sort of transit police permanently at these stations, there is no hope

For the number of times they have to send people to some of these stations it might be more efficient to have someone their permanently or for some period of time regularly.

It may be the only way to clean up some of the more problematic spaces.

  • The Edmonton Transit Service Advisory Board wrote a report about the perception of LRT safety. Data suggests that crime on public transit is trending down. Comparing the third and second quarters of 2024, reported violent crimes fell by 33% and calls for service to transit peace officers fell by 25%. Despite this, survey respondents consistently identified safety as a major concern, the report said. Lighting, cleanliness, environmental design, a feeling of isolation, and a lack of people are some factors identified that contribute to riders feeling unsafe. Administration is scheduled to return to council in March with a report outlining additional options to enhance safety on the LRT.

Apparently EPS will be putting 35 officers dedicated to transit centres, and an extra 15 more with the city wanting more COTT teams.
Great news, along with more TPOs being hired and trained, we could actually see some real progress on the safety issue this year.

Anecdotally, I have seen EPS present at Southgate station a lot lately, often multiple officers in both the bus station and LRT platform. Not sure if they were dealing with specific incidents or doing regular patrols, but its good to see as Southgate has gotten noticeably worse over the past few years.

I'm on the LRT right now, and I was plesantly surprised by the number of officers I saw. Two peace officers were patrolling Government Centre Station, and six cops were at University; three pairs dealing with three individuals.

My recap from LinkedIn. Carrie was great to chat with, sounds like more is coming to address issues and she is open to suggestion.

As always, report issues/incidents as that WILL impact resource deployment and business planning.

Thursday morning I met with the most kind/thoughtful Carrie Hotton-MacDonald of ETS, to learn more about upcoming changes, system investments and how they are working to address chronic challenges facing riders and staff.

As we look to eventually welcome thousands of new residential units and residents into our YEGDT transit will become even more critical to how people move about. We MUST continue to improve the overall experience, frequency in core neighbourhoods (good work on this ETS!) and most critically, safety.

Our system (like many cities) has been challenged over the last while with varied layering of issues and foundational societal shifts that are complex, require a variety of jurisdictional/legal reviews and commitment from all stakeholders to head towards positive outcomes.

I want to thank Carrie for taking the time to listen, share and encourage us all to report issues, bring forward ideas and propose solutions.

There have been times where I've expressed my thanks to on-site officers for their work. They've got a difficult job.

I had to take the LRT today from Churchill station to Southgate. Could not believe that at 4:15 PM there were people smoking meth inside the bus part of the station. There was a peace officer vehicle nearby so I went to tell them and they told me they already arrested somebody for doing the same just a few minutes ago. Anyways hopefully the guy gets taken care of but I can’t believe at 4:15 PM there are people smoking drugs there the rest of the trip was fine the trains were busy and all seemed in order except for Southgate bus station.
