I wonder why they didn't opt to go with one lane in each direction rather than diverting all northbound traffic to the James MacDonald Bridge?
Detour for NB is right there (turn right instead of going straight) and James Mac can take the extra capacity. Then you don't have the bottleneck of two lanes trying to squeeze down into one on both sides

A portion of the low level NB traffic will opt to use the Dawson Bridge instead, which is slated to close for repair work this fall, so why did the City drag their heels on getting this project mobilized till August? Probably could have avoided having both closed at the same time, or at least reduced the overlap, if they started this one in May.

Downtown business leaders concerned about access to the core

IIRC Cheryll Watson lost the mayoral vote to Sohi in the last municipal election.
Maybe it would have been better if she ran as a councilor for downtown rather than for mayor.

More could be done to mitigate this, but hopefully having the Valley Line East up and running will help some and there also is the nearby James MacDonald bridge which can be used instead without too much difficulty.

Forewarned, the following is me venting about this construction:
  • The lane closure signage on Connors Rd is too far down the hill and is not visible from above, causing unaware vehicles to merge at the last moment.
  • The two lane on-ramp from Connors Rd to 98th Ave has been reduced to a single lane. Given the increased traffic volumes that the bridge closure has caused it seems silly that an additional lane closure was added. In other words, if its not usable with increased volumes, why have it at all. If both lanes were open the alternating light at Connors/Scona Rd would not be necessary. I assume that the city thought that two merging lanes would be an unsafe situation, however wouldn't this suggest that this onramp is generally unsafe and could probably be reduce to a single lane? Alternatively 98th Ave WB could be reduced to a single lane with both lanes of the on-ramp being free flow. I'm not sure of the relative volumes of traffic on 98th Ave WB and Connors Rd and perhaps would simply shift traffic delays onto 98th Ave.
  • Earlier this year/last year they completed rehabilitation work on the bridge over Connors Rd, causing the same closure down to one southbound lane, this should have been done concurrently with the current project.
  • As only an outside observer, there seems to be very few contractors actually completing work on this project.

^ did you take this out of my drafts? I was going to write a similar post. The lane closure on Connors Rd NB occurring past the bend in the road so visibility coming up on it is limited is bizarre. All they have to do is start the lane closure right before the pedestrian overpass, where visibility is ample as you approach it on a completely straight road segment.

I also thought it was interesting that the project team deciding to close the second merge lane was an interesting admission that the design is terrible. Sort of surprised the City didn't reconfigure this stretch ages ago, maybe to something like below where you shift 98 ave slightly south and utilize that additional bridge lane that would then end as you approach the James Mac. Ideally this would work as drivers in the right lane WB on 98 ave would naturally begin merging into the further right lanes and it'd create less congestion for the ending left hand lane on 98 WB.

It must be hell waiting on 99 Street/Scona Road to merge onto Connors Road. At least Connors Road has the right lane (when there's no construction).

I can only speak for the late evening commute but it's never been that bad in my experience both both before they started repairs and now.
However I admit that i am usually moving opposite the primary flow paths and i don't hit the north bound crossing until after 6pm and my southbound crossings are at 7am
