^yup.
LMP has to be turned into something other than what it is now - and I'm not sure what that actually is at this point???
Pickle ball, 3X3 basketball courts, beach volleyball, bocce ball courts, lawn bowling, whatever. Make it a haven for people who want to come down and be active.
Or activate the Shumka stage. Encourage bookings for local musicians, dance troupes, etc. Concerts/performances 5,6,7days a week. Get people down there. It is such a great park. And yet another example of wasted opportunity in E-town.
I honestly think this park might be one of the best in the city.

Landscaping is top tier
Views are better than any other imo
Unreal bridge
Amazing connectivity for walking, biking, transit, and even decent parking that doesn’t feel too intrusive.
Some nearby local retail hotspots (adventure co drinks, muttart cafe, bread and butter, little brick, etc)
The funicular and lookout are awesome.
Riverboat gives unique charm
The river valley adventure co gives recreation options and a nice patio
The stage is great
The art and Chinese architecture is cool
Accidental beach nearby

I just don’t think Wilfred Laurier, Hawrelak, Victoria, Kinsmen (it’s more rec focused), or any other major park in our city stacks up.

But this one could become the untouchable #1 imo if we add some courts (basketball, Pickleball), a playground, and ideally if there was some nice retail and development above it in the quarters (if you leave the park that way it’s a tough contrast to boarded up stores and gravel lots).

How did it go? Anyone attend? Crowds? Vibe?

Was a fun time, crowd was ok but definitely lacked for a good food truck. The event was definitely more polished than the ice climbing cup this year, the team is learning how to pull things off but there was alot to compete with on a summer weekend.

Do these matter? Move the stick? Cut the mustard? Worth the squeeze?

Asking for a friend.

It's the ROI I wonder about. Don't get me wrong, more event = good, but should this be paired with something more, larger, a bigger draw?

LMP needs a good plan and activation. It has the infrastructure in place and an incredible setting. How about a sports park. Pickle ball courts, 3x3 basketball courts, beach volleyball courts. Yoga classes on one of the lawns. A fitness park with outdoor gym/ exercise equipment. This would all fit in nicely with the activities provided by the existing River Valley Adventure Company and not cost an excessive amount to put in place.

The existing Shumka stage could also be activated. All the infrastructure is in place it would just take a bit of thought and effort to program. Hand operations off to a non profit who could then book it out to local performers and musicians for a small fee.

Make LMP a place to be. A hot spot for fun and physical activity.

I think the key here is to understand that competition climbing and an outdoor wall like this is a nascent sport. The Ice Climbing World Cup was the first ever hosted in North America and this was the first real international sport climbing competition ever held in Edmonton. Rock Climbing just entered the Olympics for the first time and we had a representative from IOC come to the Ice Climbing World Cup event in February, the UIAA is working to get competition Ice Climbing in the Olympics. And we have a facility that can grow the sport, the junior national team is now located in Edmonton for example. Its very much early days for these sports, and for once Edmonton is at the forefront, and at a fraction of the cost of other similarly niche sports with small but passionate communities like the Velodrome or Mountain Bike Park.

Oh hi Downtown Calgary.

WIfe and I sat in those chairs for about an hour this week. They are a fantastic feature and I'd love to see something like this plaza in Edmonton. The riverwalk in Calgary has so much nice infrastructure (wide walkways, what a concept). The City needs to send some staff/consultants down there for inspiration.
