I don't think anyone is going to make a career of temporary garbage cleaning work, nor should they. Most likely these are part time jobs for students or others who do not have a lot of skills or experience.

When I was a student I had a summer job in parks maintenance that paid just a bit above minimum wage at the time. I was able to live at home, had few expenses and the job was not onerous. It was fine.

Why would someone deserve under a living wage just because they have a temporary or gig job? All people deserve a living wage because they are people.

The Living Wage in Edmonton is $22.30 : https://www.livingwagealberta.ca/what-is-a-living-wage
Because supply and demand and skills and training.

Living wage is so subjective and there’s a ton of other factors. And pretending picking garbage deserves wages equal to that of jobs requiring degrees and professional designations is beyond performative.

Lots of people will gladly do something like this for $10/hr because it’s easy, no training, no education, few requirements, quick cash, could do on top of regular employment.

If we can finally get back on topic...

This project really should’ve been named “imagine but don’t actually realize Jasper Ave”

Even this configuration of a tree lined barrier for the whole stretch would make such an improvement to the enjoyment of walking down the ave and we got it for 1 block

Any hope that seeing how non-transformational the current construction has been will lead to a bit more creativity & ambition for 102 Street to 109 Street? Or does ‘completed concept planning’ mean the design is set in stone?

Project Update - June 2026

The draft concept designs for Jasper Avenue New Vision Phase 3: Jasper Avenue from 102 Street to 109 Street and 107 Street Streetscaping: 99 Avenue to Jasper Avenue are ready to share. Construction timelines are yet to be determined.
Jasper Avenue New Vision was approved in 2011. Phase 1 construction, from 100 Street to 102 Street, was completed in 2013. Phase 2 construction, from 97 Street to 100 Street, was completed in 2022. The current phase builds on this work. In addition to enhancing the streetscape, the project includes entrance improvements and structural rehabilitation of the Corona and Bay/Enterprise LRT stations.

This is so incredibly underwhelming...

It's going to be nice having the rest of Jasper east of 109 refurbished. The pedestrian experience is so much nicer west of 109.

That said, they better have a good construction timeline for this because ooof this is going to be rough. Hopefully they manage to get it done within one season somehow.

Incredibly disappointing but not surprised at all. What a wasted opportunity. Our Main Street of downtown and vehicle throughput and vehicle parking take priority. and at a time when the city is trying to double the amount of people living downtown and asking the question “how can we get people to want to go downtown”. With how vague the designs are I'm prepared to be further disappointed by the landscaping and the LRT station entrance improvements. Really wish I was in town for the engagement session. I hope enough people can make it to those and get some improvements made on this design
