Despite the weather trying desperately to prevent us from having any sort of winter activities, The YEG Alpine Club of Canada Section is set up for the first ever Ice Climbing World Championship being hosted in North America. We have 91 competitors from all over the world and are super stoked about the event. We've already gotten alot of feedback that people are impressed that we have pulled this off in the middle of a city instead of the usual isolated mountain towns. The competition itself is being held on Saturday and Sunday with ticket prices ranging from $20 - $35. Monday is a free family festival day with a community competition of local climbers. Went to watch my nephew play hockey at the Downtown Community rink today at 745am.

Parked at the ICE District parkade.

1. It was not communicated or clear that you cannot get to the community rink from the parkade via Rogers Place's walkway (like you used to be able to do).
2. Broken window in the parkade stairwell up to the main floor.
3. Not two seconds outside and we were approached by two young men with backpacks asking for smokes.
4. You cannot go through the JW across 104 Ave to the rink either, which put us along 102st.
5. Thankfully, the scramble at 102/104ave is actually quite quick and responsive for pedestrians. Maybe 104st/Jasper could learn something from this.
6. Most of the trees planted on the west side of 102st no longer have branches (barely trunks) or are missing a good portion with the exception of 1 or 2.
7. We were approached by a guy totally %^&$($# up with a pair of pliers in his hand, but sidestepped him; he was yelling at everyone walking by.
8. The amount of broken bollard lights and other street furniture (some has been completely removed) was significant, especially outside of the casino. Hopefully those get repaired soon *broken window theory*.
9. All three the garbage bins were open, broken or inside out along the way.
10. The tagging and general appeal of the area left a lot of be desired.
11. Not sure until what time, but you had to be buzzed into the community rink by the attendant.

Given that the majority of the ~100 kids were likely coming from suburban locations and their parents not used to the area, I would have to say that there is more than a little room for improvement and that begins with better upkeep in and around the community rink. What an impression to leave folks with.

All of that said, it was fantastic to see so many kids coming Downtown for hockey school.
 
Please share your concerns with OEG as I think they are responsible for most of the wear and tear issues you mentioned.

Please share your concerns about the local folks with, well no one, since they didn’t do anything wrong technically.
 
Why bother when a 'world class facility' should be not just monitoring the internal concourse, but also its perimeter touchpoints. If that was my 'front lawn', I'd be embarrassed, but equally frustrated at the obvious lack of care and attention from my neighbours and fellow community members. Alas.

It's not about 'doing anything wrong, technically', its about interacting with 8-9 people in 2.5 blocks and 50% of them would have put 99% of the population off; rightly or wrongly of course.

My mom felt very uncomfortable and would not have come to visit her grandson without me there and certainly won't be back until things change.

That's a shame.
 
It is so frustrating and sad and annoying and enraging that such a small group of people can have such a negative effect on the atmosphere of the city.

I was at the Cabin on 116 Street on Friday night and some homeless person obviously high on drugs proceeded to empty the garbage can across the street which was full and threw the garbage everywhere and then took the empty garbage bag. I did go over and try and put the garbage back in the can but you know this happens all the time and the garbage will just blow around everywhere making the city look like crap plus all the vandalism and tagging and the rest.

It makes me so mad.

I wonder if OEG has a vision for Ice District plaza? The skating rink is great during the winter.
But this line-up is mostly about Fan Park and the arena itself.

There are 2 movies nights in the plaza, though, and Chick-Fil-A on Wednesdays.

They usually put out 6 or 7 tables with chairs during most weekdays which looks pretty sparse and underwhelming given the size of the plaza. Then again why put out 20-30 tables when they are likely going to be empty anyway.

- Fill the empty CRUs with entertainment/food establishments (no more banks)

- Finish the damn food court

- Build the next tower (hopefully rental apartments and/or boutique hotel)

- The plaza should feature live music and a beer garden Thursday through Sunday all summer long, with food trucks and roving street performer-style entertainers the other days of the week. Make it FEEL like a destination.

One thing that has bothered me about the design is the location of the casino. I wish it had been planned/built on the southside of 104 and connected more to the plaza. It would have given the area much more of the entertainment district feel they were going for. It feels way too disconnected where it currently is.
 
You can't force food or beverage businesses to fill the empty CRU's. Some spaces have now been empty for years, so they surely had the opportunity to take them.

They are being filled with banks because they have the money to pay for the spaces and apparently the location is worth it to them.

However, they really need to get on with completing that food court. It is a becoming disservice to all the tenants in the Stantec tower that there is still nothing there and so it diminishes the worth of the building.
