Looks like we may have up 4 bids for HBC, or parts thereof.

The BC Mall owner noted up thread is the only one public at this point.

I've confirmed another...... one I would definitely not want to see.

The others I'm not sure about yet.
Did Richard Baker put in a bid to buy it back? Existing owners had until a few days ago to express interest ahead of third parties. Since we haven’t heard, I guess he just wants to get out (thankfully).

I'd rather it be bought by Elon Musk before Richard Baker 2.0. At least he built a successful business before going off the deep end.

That’s something another Richard would say. You just want exclusivity rights. 😅

I looked up the monitor’s proceedings site and there are no notices of insider bids. I believe they had to have been made public so that third party bidders would know who they were bidding against. I think we may be safe from Richard Baker.

All joking aside, I'd love to see a well run, revamped HBC.

We need strong leadership, we need someone who won't tank the company

The BC entrepreneur looks serious. She put Woodgrove Centre up for sale to finance the purchase.

Hudson’s Bay would become Canadian owned again and she seems to have a successful track record revitalizing tired malls.

She said she wants dozens of stores and she’s Vancouver based and all of her business is in BC so it’s safe to assume that the Granville Street store and maybe some of the western Canada stores would be saved. The Calgary flagship would be such a shame if closed, I hope that one is included.

This right here exemplifies the neglect that led to The Bay's fate.

This store looks like it hasn't been renovated since the 90s while stores like Zara, H&M and Uniqlo are modern, clean and inviting. Yet, The Bay's prices are higher; you're paying for the privilege of shopping in a dark and dingy store. Who would shop here? Those who did the last time these stores were busy are either dead or in a retirement home.

If The Bay does get sold, they really need to pay attention to customer experience and environment. Too many of The Bay's stores look like this. Either convert them to low cost Zellers where price drives foot traffic or let go of the store. It's just dragging the brand reputation of Hudson's Bay in the stores that have been more or less kept up like Queen Street and Yorkdale.

If you thought the design of this Bay store was old school (and btw most Bay stores look like this outside Toronto), what if told you that at this location, there is still a whole in the wall at multiple entrances where there was until around 2022, a wall mounted taxi payphone. That's right. A payphone to call a taxi. Irony is dead. A dead way of communications to contact a dead way of transportation, inside of a dead way to shop!

I am not one of those dead, nor am I in a retirement home. (too young) However, even I only go to the Bay searching out clothing with the red squared sticker on it. (clearance price)
It gets me in the door, at least. Sometimes a flyer special gets me spending also, but I don't pay regular retail, that's for sure...

A taxi is not dead. There are many who do not use Uber or Lyft. The taxi industry is doing just fine.

I do use Uber, But i had a family emergency at a hospital last Saturday. When i got the news, I waved like a mad man for a taxi outside a restaurant i was at downtown. Got one within a mintue!. And got to the hospital in less than 10 minutes. i was at the hospital till about 5 am.Every time i went out to get fresh air, I saw lots of taxi's dropping people off in similar situations to mime. Yes the indrusty is far from dead.

I use Beck Taxi about once a week as a splurge to get to work in the morning, usually Monday when I am in a "bllllughghghgh why is Monday?" mood.

However, I have noticed that for on the street hailed pickups the drivers are increasingly aggressive to insist on a negotiated price up front, and will openly refuse requests for a metered rate, or if your destination is too close will refuse the ride completely.

We’re getting off topic, but I just wanted to add that I haven’t used a taxi since I was verbally accosted on my last trip after I told the driver to start the meter. He literally berated me the entire ride back for calling him out and saying it was against the law.

Crazy thing is the meter still worked out to be more than what Uber was quoting me at that moment. I only took the cab because it was already in front of me. Never again.

I don't get why one would use a taxi instead of an Uber.
I don't know if it's my location on the east side of downtown, but Beck often arrives in less than two minutes after calling for one, which takes about ten seconds. I call and by the time I get down the elevator sometimes the driver is already calling me asking where I am.
They are also usually, though not always, cheaper.

But more importantly, I've regularly had Uber drivers take very poor routes to get where I want to go because they follow the directions from their driver app, while city licensed taxi drivers usually have much better knowledge of actual conditions on the ground at specific locations and times of day. The number of times I've wound up stuck in traffic on Bathurst Street on a Saturday night, which the city taxis know how to avoid, has I'm sure caused a significant increase in my future heart attack risk. For downtown at least, Uber drivers definitely don't know their way around. And don't even think of telling them to go on a different route! What the app says is gospel. You must comply. Passengers know nothing about the city!

Beck also has a very good app these days. I find taxi drivers more reliable and the fare differential isn’t as much as it used to be. I like not supporting exploitative Silicon Valley venture capital and tech billionaires as much as I can – meaning no Uber, Lyft, X, Amazon, Airbnb, Skip, etc. for me.

So you judge by one cab? I use taxis and disappointments are rare. Not all drivers are like that. Uber drivers can also easily be moody.
