Only if she’s going to return HBC to its roots as a reasonably priced department store to attract the middle income demographic including young adults who are looking for quality and value, rather than a larger scale version of Harry Rosen, Chanel, Tiffany & Co, or Holts. Torontonians and Canadians just don’t have the income or inclination to support a seven story palace to pricey glam
Sure, but also to be careful not to fall below, or be too much on par with Giant tiger quality, should they choose to also maintain Zellers inside the Bay stores. Zellers should be a Walmart threat, not a GT threat. Also, Bay would need to tackle Simons, not Walmart.

The very reason the likes of Giant Tiger, Homesense and Winners exist is that traditional places like the HBC where you’d go for household items, towels, linens, clothing, etc. pushed their loyal customers away.

GT is low end. Competes with Dollarama and Walmart.

I wish we still had target. Something middle ground and better than Walmart.

Target is a lesson for retailers that rush to fill a void. IIRC, they moved into Zellers locations when it folded, and didn't have their logistics figured out. They also made a bunch of errors in assuming they could port their US business model here without changes.

I'm sure there's a whole thread on Target's failed entry into the Canadian market.

The Bay has two types of stores that are operating in a way that neither succeeds. The suburban stores in mid-to-low scale malls which should really be Zellers and the flagships in expensive downtown real estate and upscale malls that should be Hudson's Bay. The run down suburban Bay stores are dragging down the brand image of the stores that are trying to appeal to mid-to-upscale customers. The former should go up against Walmart and the latter should try to fit in Simons' demographic. Neither of them should try to be Holt Renfrew.

I think they should aim higher than simply be Zellers of old - something like Target would be a perfect fit for suburban malls. Trade slightly higher prices for non-staples with a more curated, highly quality inventory.

That's precisely it.

Stores like Eglinton Square or the former Yonge and Bloor store should have been Zellers. Stores like STC, Square One, Yorkdale and Queen St are of a higher standard, more what you would expect from the Bay.

At some point you need to set a standard otherwise the entire brand suffers from inconsistency.

A look at the Hudsons Bay liquidation sales in Mapleview Centre in Burlington last Saturday... you can see it is already somewhat hollowed out inside with some sections already cleared out.

This right here exemplifies the neglect that led to The Bay's fate.

This store looks like it hasn't been renovated since the 90s while stores like Zara, H&M and Uniqlo are modern, clean and inviting. Yet, The Bay's prices are higher; you're paying for the privilege of shopping in a dark and dingy store. Who would shop here? Those who did the last time these stores were busy are either dead or in a retirement home.

If The Bay does get sold, they really need to pay attention to customer experience and environment. Too many of The Bay's stores look like this. Either convert them to low cost Zellers where price drives foot traffic or let go of the store. It's just dragging the brand reputation of Hudson's Bay in the stores that have been more or less kept up like Queen Street and Yorkdale.

Looks like we may have up 4 bids for HBC, or parts thereof.

The BC Mall owner noted up thread is the only one public at this point.

I've confirmed another...... one I would definitely not want to see.

The others I'm not sure about yet.
