The first proposal for Celestica was filed in 2014 and a settlement was approved by Council in June 2016. Yes, I'm nit picking, but it hasn't been "decades".
If one wants to be pedantic: 1.1 decades does indeed take a decimal.

This has been talked about for LONG before they filed the proposal. Our own thread goes back to 2007.

Now back to the 401 tunnel.

RFP for a feasibility study being issued:

Good, another step closer to this idiot fantasy dream being DOA once the astronomical price tag comes out.

The one thing you should always be weary of ford is him doing things that would get him votes at any cost
remember according to him this and the 407 buyout are the only 2 options that solve congestion

Which doesnt make any sense if he used his brain here since he already secured himself another 4 years recently.

The thing is, one could build another 2-3 Ontario Lines for the price of this idiotic idea and get far more effective results. Heck they could probably fully electrify 2-3 GO lines with additional stations and new rolling stock, and that itself would be cheaper than this will ever be.

hes a populist, its not that hes thinking of what gets him elected or how to make the best of a situation, he thinks only "what will get me votes"
litterally every decision he has made can be seen as that

Again.

We have no idea what the scope of this project even is!

Ford has waxed poetic about it. I'm sure it'll include a tunnel.

What we do know:

1. MTO Is studying the central 401 through the GTA, roughly 50-60kms worth.
2. They are investigating all methods to increase capacity. A tunnel is one of them. A tunnel will likley be used in part of it.

What we do not know:

1. how long the tunnel might be. It might be the entire length. It may only be a small portion.
2. where the tunnel might be.
3. what other methods may be used.
4. How much it will cost.

Honestly a way to improve congestion through the bottleneck between the 427 and 409 isn’t a bad idea.

Making it a 50km tunnel is bad.
The Ford government should tunnel this stretch of the 401 before committing to tunneling the entire length of the 401 in Toronto.

Has the Ford government done a study yet to see if it would be cheaper to remove tolls off of the 407? Or construct the freight bypasses and allow for improved GO service along the Kitchener, Milton and Midtown lines?

I can't believe this is moving forward. And I say this as someone who commutes to work by car on a daily basis.

How about starting with bus priority lanes?
Unless there a bus using it every 3 seconds, MTO will not allow it nor any removal of existing lanes for it.

To build this tunnel will require the removal of 2 or more lanes to build the launch site as well the reaction site as well removal of the dirt and delivering material to the site. This will be for X years to build the tunnel and ramps creating gridlock 7/24 for those area more than it is today. Depending on the number of lanes to be in those tunnels, how much of the existing lanes will disappear forcing drivers to merge into lanes to get around those portals??

Then where are the airshafts and emergency exit as well dealing with the exhaust fumes from those shaft???

One hope there is an service tunnel to get emergency vehicles to accident site fast.

Far cheaper and faster to build 3 lanes elevated roads that would have to be very high to get over elevated ramps and overpasses using the centre barrier areas with high crash walls. This would give you an extra 6 lanes in both directions, but still have to deal with ramps at both ends like the portal for the tunnel. China already has very high highways.
