Reading these comments and looking at these maps, I start to question the utility of running Line 5 to the airport. Is it not way easier to just take UP down to Mt Dennis and on to Line 5?

If Line 5 is already running all the way to Renforth, it's almost trivial to extend it to the airport. The airport extension would be a faster connection for people living along Eglinton or near the Mississauga Transitway, and encourage reverse-direction commuting for airport area employees.

I would agree it's not as much of a slam dunk as it's made out to be, though, considering the 180 degree turn and 401 crossing it would require... I'm half tempted to say extending line 6 down from the airport to Renforth makes just as much sense.

I actually think extending Line 6 makes more sense. It serves a large area to the north of the 401.

Why not both, but if it had to be one, Line 5. It has higher capacity, and provides more redundancy for the ~1 million people living in Old Toronto and East York. If UPX is down, Line 1--->Line 5 is a viable, albeit slower alternative.

I don't see Line 6 going longer than 48.5 m trains anytime soon. Line 5 just needs new rolling stock for 90 m trains, it should also have a larger catchment radius due to its higher speeds.

At this point... I've become partial to calling Renforth - Airport - Woodbine a minimum operable segment of a 407 light metro. In isolation a glorified peoplemover, but less awkward and more useful later than LRT spurs.

Presumably the Renforth station area will be densified. But also it serves as a connection point to the Transitway and GO Bus services.

On the other hand, if the Ontario Line - or whatever the 407/427 Transitway ends up serving Pearson/Renforth/Kipling then that would make it redundant. Perhaps best just to leave it ending at Renforth for a couple of decades to see what transpires with the proposed Gateway terminal east of Airport Road, development, etc.

About 4.5 km of elevated subway isn't THAT cheap to just throw the money away (though if they do get there, another 2.5 from the proposed new Gateway km to Malton GO almost seems like a no-brainer!)

For those who haven’t been to Renforth Station, I recommend that you do go as it will be one of the most transport rich points in the west GTA. And as far as density goes, I think that there will be some. 😂
