What do you think of a Hyperloop between Edmonton and Calgary?

where does Transpod get their funding? I’m almost scared to find out how much the AB gov has given them for a concept that’s never been built anywhere and likely never will.

They claim to have received over $680 billion in venture capital funding which is less than 10% of their highly optimistic estimates for build costs. Thankfully, the province didn't actually fund them. They did give it a veneer of legitimacy though, which is bad enough.

At the very least, hopefully we get the test portion completed, which is Downtown to the airport. I wouldn't be upset with that.

Well, that's a short enough of a distance that it doesn't need to actually meet any of its performance targets because it will never hit even a scant fraction of its claimed top speed, and if we want a weird nonstandard gadgetbahn that's hard to source replacement equipment for, we might as well as just build a maglev and not have to worry about the whole issue of getting people in and out of pods in vacuum. Or electrified regional rail and have fast, high capacity airport connections with no weird gadgetbahn issues at all.

For that matter, even for Edmonton to Calgary, the concept offers negligible advantages over extant maglev. Like if you somehow manage to get a perfectly straight ROW, you'll only shave a few minutes off in exchange for much lower capacity and higher complexity and all of the issues of getting passengers in and out of pods in vacuum.

Im also building a hyperloop if anyone wants to invest a few billion.
I’ve got about the same chance of getting it built.

Y'all joke but there is a NON-zero chance that it can/will be built. Nothing wrong with some ambition.

Unless you're also funded by Broughton Capital Group and the China-East Resources Import & Export Company I think they have a slightly higher chance than you @SMayo.

There is a truly zero chance of it really offering any advantage at all over extant mass transit technologies in the context of the Edmonton-Calgary corridor, though, even if performance claims are taken at face value.

I agree -- it will never be built in Alberta where opinions re new-and-different have so calcified as to see the naysayers cheering on the impossibility of the possible.

There's a big difference between "cheering on the impossibility of the possible" and looking at what is relatively simple math and saying that even if it's built it will never be economical to operate or to ride and it will never offer the time savings and flexibility of other options.

A lot of assumptions here. I'll wait to see what the study shows. This is why its being explored/discussed.
