Calgary with yet another hotel proposal. They will have added more hotel buildings than we have added major residential ones in the last decade in Downtown/central Edmonton.

Truman has a number of exciting hotel projects coming - JW, W, Autograph and Fairmont. New vertical for the Trutina's from their traditional condo projects and freehold housing.

Saying Edmonton has to up our game isn't really a valid statement, we are not a market that would need this number of hotels.

How about one or two more? We don't need a whole bunch but a couple wouldn't hurt.

I think we could use one more in the 3.5-4 category. An Alt or Autograph in downtown would be a perfect property to complement the JW and Fairmont as the luxury hotels. We get one of those we should be good for a while.

The confidence to do a downtown hotel in Edmonton would have to come from a local developer and IMO the confidence is there with the way downtown looks. The CoE working from home, doesn't help that confidence.

Yeah, I don't think most people here are asking or expecting more than one or two fairly decent, nice new hotels, probably not luxury or high end.

Ironically what the provincial government has done with having its employees go back to the office has probably helped boost downtown more than what the city could but hasn't done. I realize they are somewhat constrained by labour agreements, but it would help if they did more than just talk.

It's great to see the Calgary business community exude the confidence needed for building a new hotel despite their city workers still working from home 3 days a week. Inspiring!

Calgary has other downtown HQ workers. Your argument is vapid nonsense in comparison to Edmonton where the CoE is one of the largest employers. You don’t know what you’re talking about despite championing your own views.

Exactly. There is a big difference between us and them in terms of the number of downtown office workers and this shows that having more does contribute a lot to vibrancy.

Also over the decades, our city has been very bad at attracting more business offices to downtown and this has been fairly stagnant, which is one reason why our downtown struggles continue.

It will be interesting to see how developers, both public and private, react to slower population growth in the coming years. Edmonton is already seeing a significant decrease in growth compared to previous years. Given how much supply is in the pipeline, one has to wonder when that vacancy rate will start to creep up and how much lag there will be in new projects starting.

Add in then the number of conferences, out of town business traffic and the stampede and the Calgary demand makes sense vs Edmonton. Doesn’t mean we couldn’t use one or two more but I don’t think comparisons to Calgary are all that valid. We are vastly difference cities and markets and that’s just the way it is.
