I'll go back to one of my earlier posts - I think the team did indeed have the talent to play better (going back to last September) and go further in the playoffs than they did.

They're not playing any more this year because their high end talent was worked to death and the supporting cast didn't get enough ice time to do their jobs.

Why do players get injured? Other than freak accidents, they get injured because they're overworked or because they're not warmed up enough from sitting on the bench.

Questions for the off-season:

1. GM remain?
2. Coach?
3. Goaltending (yet again)?
4. Lots of lower roster decisions to be made.
5. What's missing? - depth scoring or a stronger back end?

There's a lot of talk about injuries and playing a lot of games, and sure it plays a part, but the two main issues that have plagued them for the past few seasons are still there. Goaltending and defense.

Much like the finals against Florida, the Oilers are giving up too many chances too easily. Goaltending isn't great, but the blame isn't all on the goaltending.

This team consists of 2 super stars and 3 good players who score a lot of points on the power play (RNH, Hyman, and Bouchard), but after that, there's not much else. They aren't a well rounded, deep team, and boat loads of ice time is given to the two superstars in trying to make up that shortfall.

If anyone wants my opinion what the Oilers should do for the off-season:

Absolutely no more buyouts please. They're still paying for Jack Campbell's buyout until 2030!
Acquire a potentially elite goalie via draft or trade.
Re-sign Connor Ingram.
Jake Walman, Ty Emberson, Trent Frederic and Tristin Jarry need to be traded for some stud defensemen and power forwards who can defend, score and fight.
Let Adam Henrique, Curtis Lazar and Max Jones walk.
Jack Roslovic, Jason Dickinson, Kasperi Kapanen, Connor Murphy and Calvin Pickard are UFAs who can stay if they can be re-signed at reasonable rates.
Colton Dach and Spencer Stastney are RFAs, they're likely not going anywhere unless they're lured away by offer sheets.
Isaac Howard, Quinn Hutson, Connor Clattenburg, Josh Brown, Beau Akey and Matt Tompkins are ready to step up from Bakersfield.

The problem with the oilers is they have been in a win now mode for 10-12 years trading away all their draft picks for veterans. The veterans have now moved on and the cupboard is bare. They are screwed.

Why trade for an elite goalie when you can pick one up at Walmart?

Let me put it this way: the Oilers could have drafted Jesper Wallstedt in the 1st round of the 2021 draft. But instead, they traded draft picks with Minnesota and drafted Xavier Bourgault. Wallstedt has now emerged as an elite goalie with the Wild, while Bourgault is currently toiling in the minors with Ottawa.

I want the Oilers to avoid such incompetence in the draft.

The primary thing that needs to happen for the Oilers is that they need to get a new system where from day one of this next season they focus on having four solid lines that receive equal playing time. Yes, Connor and Leon are the focus and top players of this team and should get more playing time but the focus should be on making it impossible for another team to focus simply on those two players and be successful. The system should be where if another team tries to focus on our stars they will get punished severely because the other lines will hurt them as well.

I would agree. The only issue is getting those solid players. It might not be a popular take here in Oil country, but from a Jets fan point of view, the Oilers look like a team of 2 superstars and 3 or 4 good players, who get a lot of points on the power play. The rest are players are average or below average. Kapanen and Podkolzin looked good in this year's playoffs, but whether they are going to continue that kind of play is anyone's guess. They really needed to build up better 3rd and 4th line players, over the past few years but they haven't.
Trades are going to be hard. Who could they trade that would get them better value? Nobody really. Best bet is try and luck out on grabbing a free agent like they did with Hyman.
