Barcelona is my favourite Spanish city - perhaps because it’s the most European of the Spanish cities. While I prefer it to Paris, it won’t displace Amsterdam on my list. There is a Catalonian haughtiness - reminiscent of Paris - that is somewhat offsetting although, like Amsterdam, the ease of communicating in English is much better than in Paris. There is also an innate/palpable fondness for Canada and Canadians in the Netherlands that is unmatched anywhere else in the world and which imposes an obligation to remember our own history that is too readily forgotten elsewhere, including at home.
