As much as I didn't think hockey really needed to come downtown in the first place (and I'm seeing that after the fact that there were a few advantages to that) and had concerns as to what would happen to Northlands if it was done (that particular bridge is burned), I'm looking forward to this. It is an ideal location for a TOD, and all of the Northlands stuff was a big part of why the area was such a hole to begin with.

The way we continue to refuse to recognize the cultural and social and planning significance of retaining/repurposing existing structures is nothing short of shameful.

I'm still on board if there was ever a possibility to resurrect repurposing Coliseum. It would also create another valuable stop/location along the existing Lrt line while fulfilling some kind of purpose.

I wonder if there was enough public support on the idea of repurposing. Did people get behind the idea enough which might have had some impact on city retaining this?

The city’s process and terms for their RFP pretty much guaranteed they would not receive the high quality submissions that were warranted. Much like the Province’s handling of the old Remand Centre and the old RAM, the handling of the files pretty much guarantees the outcome supporting the predetermined desire to demolish.

This is probably an unrealistic idea, but I've thought for a while now that Rexall would be perfect for converting to a big sound stage for use in TV/movie productions and arena concert production development/rehearsals. Try to lure some of the stuff being done in VAN/CGY to Edmonton. Even some Hollywood stuff might want to move north with the current political climate and how far the dollar could go here. The area around the arena could be developed into a mini Olympic village-style development for crew, actors, musicians, etc. and maybe even an outdoor component for filming natural-looking exterior shots, street scenes, etc.

Of course, this would all require some big-time investments from someone and I have no idea who that would be, but it's fun to think about. Doesn't Katz have a stake in Silver Studios?

Even the plan to adapt it to other ice rink uses priced out to more expensive than building a new facility.
When you delegate the pricing of the various options to the same group that wants to see something demolished, it’s not surprising that all the options will be estimated at higher that the demolition cost and greenfield options.

I always thought there were three important legs to K Days. Of course the activity exhibition grounds were a huge part, but also the race track which attracted a regular crowd and even more during K Days.

Lastly there was a focus on events elsewhere in the city, particularly downtown that signaled the arrival of K Days and got the city's attention. Now I feel that is sorely missing.

If we are going to have an event like K Days that excites and engages the city, I think it needs to be more than just a midway and some other events at the exhibition grounds.
