Canadian Half Marathon champions tomorrow. Some very fast Canadians are running. If I wasn’t in Vancouver I would be watching that race. Deepest men’s field in a long time.

Half starts at 7:45am - will be done quickly.

Marathon starts at 7am

The marathon is a good opportunity to showcase the event centre and this part of Jasper. Had a very pleasant experience last year. Only gripe was that some of the adjacent restaurants were closed when literally thousands of people were downtown looking for snacks/coffee/brunch during or after the race.

If anyone is around the marathon this year, share your experience!

Did the half today and it was packed out. A bit too busy honestly. They had some issues with crowds bottlenecking and being stuck for 10+ minutes without movement. Not sure The fix, I know this was a big year.

Cool to see so many downtown though. Although 109-103st sure is a ghost town. Barely any normal people out and about walking those sections.

Area around the convention centre looked great though. Weather was beautiful. A good showcase of our city to others.

And before.

I had multiple texts asking me what might be open or available.

What an opportunity to line a few sections with patios/beer/coffee gardens.

Does EDBA work with businesses in advance of these events to capitalize on events?

Mostly the stigma of the area and the fact the current state of it is unappealing. Also because there is still quite of bit of other land available in other areas downtown and close to downtown.

It is a crime that GIbson Block does not have any active CRUs. A cafe in the sharp corner of the building could do well and make it easier to revitalize the area.
The ground floor is the operational floor for the WEAC shelter that houses residents in the upper floors. Once e4c builds its new building Gibson block is going to become available for other uses. I don't believe e4c actually owns the building (I may be wrong), does anyone know who owns it? The City and a couple of large insurance claims have resulted in a lot of money put into keeping the building bones in relatively good condition.

The time for them to move out is yesterday. A decent cafe on that corner would do well for the Quarters, there is no better location that has eyes on the street than Gibson Block. It's time for people to have a reason to go there and make the place safe to walk through. It boggles my mind that WEAC did nothing about it, whatever contract they have with the city should have been torn up. Jan Reimer was the worst mayor Edmonton ever had, and the worst advocate for downtown east, she ran WEAC for decades. They could have had a cafe there employing homeless women, helping them get back on their feet. Instead we have a rooming house that has done nothing for the area for decades. Giving homeless people jobs is the solution to the housing problem. The only good thing they did was maintain the building that was restored in the '90s.

Edmonton seems to be falling behind in terms of available hotel rooms. In the last couple of years we have lost the Union Bank Inn, Super 8 Old Strathcona, Coliseum Inn, Eastglen Inn, Klondike Inn, Glenora B&B, etc. I know some on the list aren't brands but they do fill a niche. Other than the JW Marriott, I can't think of another hotel opening in Edmonton the last few years.
Places I would like added capacity. Downtown including connected to the Convention Centre, 124 St, University, Strathcona, Millwoods. Why is adding capacity important. We are a growing city but our accommodation sector has not kept up. We need rooms for concerts, conferences, sports, family visits, tourism, etc. If we don't fulfill the need, some of those start going to other cities instead.
Anyone know of any hotel projects in the planning stages in Edmonton?
