RBC doesn't alone by itself but in combination with other businesses and organizations it is noticeably and increasingly busier downtown again during the work day.

Also I expect there are more people working at RBC downtown than in just those three branches.
There are. The office they "inherited" from HSBC was the 3rd largest for that bank in Canada, and had a couple hundred employees alone, not counting the branch ones, and as far as friends of mine say, they have kept pretty much everyone. It'll probably be about 250-300 people from this alone. If other banks (and businesses in general) follow suit, it'd be a couple of thousand more people coming into Downtown during the working week.

^No, they've taken the space between Lorenzo's and Subway that used to be a Korean place.

"When the Oilers play, Edmonton wins. During Round 1, restaurant spending near Rogers Place jumped as much as +89% on game days — with city-wide increases up to +24%. Even away games lit up the local economy."

Just had my first experience with visiting a business I frequent occasionally that has had parking meters removed, and my goodness was it aggravating.

1) There was no sign anywhere near where the parking meter used to be informing you what had happened and I could not locate the sign. I ended up asking the business for directions. The sign was a full block down the street from the old parking meter location and perpendicular to the street so invisible from afar.

2) There is no option to use the free 15 minute parking on the QR code linked website. You only have options for a 0.5 hr, 1 hr, 1.5 hr, or 2 hr stay. All of which require your credit card. To access the 15 minute parking you MUST download the app. Many of us are trying to reduce our phone dependency and don't want more apps. The old system of just putting in your plate into the machine and choosing the 15 minute option was vastly superior.

This does not create a welcoming environment for commerce, and reinforces why people choose businesses outside the core with free parking.

You can preach about not wanting a car dependent city all you want, but we are having a hard enough time encouraging businesses in the core and don't have the critical mass to get away with adding barriers. A 1000 little annoyances like this will further push Edmonton into a donut city.

^^Even not super close to Downtown businesses were packed yesterday. Was at OJ's on 124 st and inside totally reserved, just a few tables left on patio.

Looks like most or all of the DBA bins have been removed?!?!?! There used to be a few on Jasper and they are no longer?

Probably becasue they sucked? That design was never good - they rusted and were able to be broken into easily and then looked like 'garbage' (pardon the pun) afterward.

We don't need to reinvent the wheel here, just use a standard receptacle design City-wide and pick something currently in use somewhere in the world that is highly durable and hard to break into. I know our classic aggregate garbage cans that are synonymous at bus stops check that 'highly durable' requirement, but they have no lid and can create a terrible mess when rummaged through.

I've never understood the top garbage can - people start fires in them and they melt all the time. I called the City to ask why they didn't make them out of any other material, and the gist is that even with having to replace them multiple times per year, it's far cheaper to stick with the plastic ones.
