I completely missed this announcement. I hope it doesn't come to fruition, considering how hard EPS has dropped the ball with transit. EPS and the city have already taken steps to improve communications between officers from each organization on the ground, and established a joint leadership group; that work should continue instead.

It's nonsense, and I see no possible reality in which the City would capitulate to this request. The problem isn't a supply of officers, because if it were, just use Provincial funds to authorize a bunch of overtime. The problem is that there are no mechanisms in place to effectively "crack down" on drugs.

It's provincial overreach without the strategy or competence to back it up, because it doesn't matter if a bylaw officer is empowered to issue a $25 to someone floating around downtown.

Sadly, it looks like the province forced Edmonton's hand today. This article just came out.

"Officials say municipalities are to work with police leadership to bring their community peace officer programs under the temporary leadership of police. The province says it will monitor the effectiveness of these changes in improving public safety to 'ensure the best path forward.'"

To me, that sounds like they're laying the groundwork for a long term "temporary" arrangement.

It also sounds like they're just roping peace officers into this to try and please the Trump administration.

"Officials say the measure comes in response to the province wanting to work with all levels of government to address concerns around fentanyl trafficking and border security."

I can't tell if this is applicable to all Alberta municipalities, or if they're just showing the numbers from municipalities that agreed to this initiative.

Drugs just got their strongest opponent - some guy who enforces hot tub building permits.

The Global story refers to 34 police forces across the province, so it seems like not just us.

But two questions, if this is a such good idea why wasn't it done before and if it is not really such a good idea, why is it being done now?

Isn't apathy a form of acceptance? When I go to Tokyo, Seoul or in KL where I currently live - I feel safe.
Not to downplay the huge positive impact of fewer drugs and non-tolerance of certain types of public behaviour, you will also see some things in KL that you won’t see here:

I tracked down the press conference, and Sohi and EPS spoke there along with the province. Apparently they're setting up a command centre led by EPS that will also have city reps.

Don't forget the fantastic non sequitur of "Jew-hate rallies"!
Which you certainly don’t have in Malaysia! Not only does the country not recognize Israel, it doesn’t recognize Judaism as a religion and considers many if not most sects to be criminal. The state is overtly anti-Semitic and has been since the 1970’s, to the point where what was once a minority but vibrant community has decreased to less than 100 individuals in the entire country.

The statue of Emily Murphy, one of the Famous Five, has been removed from the entrance to the park, along with plaques on the pedestal. All that remain are her shoes on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025. Photo by Shaughn Butts /Postmedia

This is why we can't have nice things... :(

^^ Look Ken, I know that you have a son in Singapore and I have a daughter there who is a tenured professor at NUS and also teaches extension classes for Yale that maintains a presence in Singapore. Further she is married to a Malay national so I am somewhat tuned into the area through back and forth discussions with the two of them. Our friend is piping off about assumptions without knowing much about the subject he is trying to "sway" us on. I have written him off as a blow-hard and a hard-right leaning apologist for all things Trumpian. I am not sure there is much use in even responding to his faux attestations.

I grew up in Southeast Asia so I don’t have rose coloured glasses on the region lol. At least here I don’t have to worry about my phone or backpack being swiped by guys on motorbikes.
