Chicken and egg. If you don't give them strong tools and put forward a strong message, EPS will just choose to do less and you can't hold them accountable.

Marshall Smith: Alberta's effective approach to drugs should be a North American standard

In 2024, opioid deaths in the province decreased by 38 per cent

Regardless of my feelings regarding the National Post and the current Legislative Assembly, if that "38%" number is grounded in reality then that's a pretty impressive result.

An interesting comment from a prominent American on a fishing trip leading to quite the reaction and hopeful recognition of Edmonton's single biggest issue for any future progress... the state of its City/Downtown and how it was compared to S.F.

Which is absolutely inaccurate and overblown and ridiculous beyond all belief. Our downtown has problems, but to compare it to SF? Come on, that's just insulting to our intelligence.

Sure, but his point was that he walked a couple of blocks and had two incidents in a short period of time and that is VERY common from my experience and feedback.

It's BAD, unacceptable, embarassing and MUST see far more significant improvements.

I don't think it's overblown. He was probably staying at either the Marriott or the Fairmont, guessing the former. I live right there and see this crap all of the time. The city, it's police service, and the province have all been embarrassing on this matter.

While I haven't been downtown as much over the last 15 months, 2 or 3 of these types of encounters has certainly been my experience with each visit. And prior to that I was downtown at least 3 full days per week and 2-3 (or more) of these types of encounters each day was commonplace. Embarrassing, unacceptable, infuriating, disgraceful...........
Whatever word you want to use to describe it, it has to change before we can expect any serious improvement in our downtown core. GoC, GoA, CoE + others still getting a MASSIVE failing grade on this critical issue from me.

I goes this fool hasn’t been in ANY of his own US Downtowns…..from Seattle to Miami…..this guy sees an altercation of “2 people…who must be high on Fentanyl….fight with police” so there are ZERO police altercations between homeless people and cops in his country?! Has he ever been to SFO and their “Tenderloin” district? It makes out DT look like Versailles on a Summer Day.

Priorities, neighbour cop spent last night doing Parking lot traffic control in a Church parking lot in Millwoods at 3 X OT, rather than patrol DT.

Unfortunately, we are getting caught up in a political storm and of course you know our Premier will not stand up for us and defend us or help.

But likewise I am disappointed with our municipal politicians who will just blame the province and also seem ineffective. And lets not forget Cartmell is on the current city council. He is not making things better, just perpetuating the political blame game.

So I find them all embarrassing and disgusting. Frankly I will not vote for any of them - the Premier, the Mayor or Cartmell.

Public spaces bylaw and transit usage before committee this morning.

Maybe, just maybe, this will be a positive step forward in reducing the inadequacy of a safe and reasonable experience for the general public when visiting and using public spaces in our fair city.

Let's see where this lands.

How do you figure that will happen? It's an amalgamation of 3 already-in-force bylaws with some slight technical changes (like introducing special gathering permits and including vaping under existing smoking bylaws).

Evidence of multiple little fires along 104st this morning, including a melted capital garbage can or two and some other random things lit and burned.

Of course they were…our hoodie-wearing-ball cap-wearing-skid mark-street rat homeless folk all seem to be part time pyromaniacs……..would it kill them to get freaking jobs?
