We know what was being proposed in the images from several years ago, but the point was that what's being built there now looks as though it doesn't match the image of that layout, as pointed out in the image in Frankietls post.
The pier is in a location where the old image did not show anything would be built, and its alignment would seem to show something going straight towards Dundas St W, instead of across the Barrie Line tracks.

Look like DECAST precast retaining wall blocks.

Probably for lanscaping. Soil will be filled to the top of the wall and higher than surrounding ground.

Could it be that this part (the part not shown in the West Toronto Railpath drawings) is all being built as part of the Davenport Greenway contract which is underway now? It's intended to connect to the WTR, which is on its own (later) schedule.

...
From Metrolinx:
The works you are currently observing south of Dundas Street West, between the Barrie Line tracks and the No Frills at 222 Lansdowne Avenue, are not part of the West Toronto Railpath Extension project. At this time, the West Toronto Railpath Extension remains in the procurement phase, with a construction contractor yet to be awarded. As such, construction of that project has not yet begun.

The piers and supports you are seeing are being constructed as part of a separate project delivering a new multi-use path in the area. This project is independent from the Railpath Extension.
This new multi-use path will:
  • Begin at the current terminus of the Davenport Diamond Greenway,
  • Extend southward, following the Barrie Corridor (the West Toronto Rail Path follows the Kitchener Corridor),
  • Cross over Dundas Street West, and
  • End where the West Toronto Railpath Extension will begin.
  • You will find more information and map showing the path here: www.metrolinx.com/connectingdavenport. You will notice that the West Toronto Railpath Extension is not mentioned on this webpage.
  • Again, that is because the project has yet to begin. It will be added once the contractor is selected.

"No silly, you're mixing up your trail projects." There are four different trail contracts on the map and the West Toronto Railpath Extension is literally the unmapped fifth. Hilarious.
I'm still not entirely sure if or how the existing part of the West Toronto Railpath will connect to the Extension, as they seem to purposefully avoid the subject. They seem to be trying to ignore the supposedly "final" design presented to the public back in 2020 that was to have included the new bridge crossing the Barrie Line, and mentioning the West Toronto Railpath extension as if that phrase now only refers to the path that will start near Lansdowne Ave and extend to the south.
So if that's the case now, I think it would be what I described in this post and bearcat had already guessed, that there likely won't be a new bridge, and the idea would be for everyone to just use the short stretch of the existing Dundas St W bridge instead to get from the existing part of the WTR to the new extension. But your guess is as good as mine.

That's really cynical, yet probably true.

Really need that Sorauren park connection.
I'm assuming that might be the eventual plan?
We can now see the "piers and supports" for something there to have a path that goes up and back down, presumably to connect to a bridge that goes somewhere?

The response I received from Metrolinx was after I requested a map or image showing the layout of what is presently being built there, because it doesn't match the last alignment shown to the public in the 'Family of Bridges' image from 2020. Their response did not do that. I find it very strange that they're already well into in the process of building something, yet don't seem willing to show us what it is, apart from the "Connecting Davenport" image above which doesn't really explain anything in any more than an incredibly vague manner.

Their secrecy and silly word games are ridiculous. I thought I was reasonably direct, concise, and polite in the request I made through their contact form. I don't know what else we can do if they inexplicably don't want us to know what they're already in the process of building.
