Work on the ceremonial ramp continues as some of the coverings are being removed, revealing what’s been done.

Brackets have been installed that hold up the walls. Not sure if these are temporary but I imagine they’ll be covered by some sort of cladding leading up the ramp, perhaps stainless steel to match the newer elements.

I wish they had abandoned the idea of the car ramp which is no longer used for that, and instead built terraced steps that would make it easier to walk up, leaving one wide a ramp for accessibility and moving gardening equipment up and down.

Update on the the Ceremonial Ramp renovation:

Looks like they're just going to pave it. A missed opportunity to reinvent this ramp for pedestrian use with a series of landings that would make it easier to walk up to the roof garden and where people could sit on the steps. Maybe keep a path open on the side for maintenance vehicles to access the roof.

The brackets on the walls look terrible. I keep hoping they're going to cover them with something then it looks more and more permanent.

Walking past this morning I noticed they've blocked off almost all of the frontage between the walkway parallel to Bay St and Bay St itself and active work was occurring (they were cutting concrete behind the fence at 7:30am, so if you are sensitive to concrete dust as I am, avoid the Bay Street walkway for a bit. I did not have a good time this morning. Wont be walking past City Hall again for a while sadly)

The ramp is finished

If I had to grade this, it’s a missed opportunity and worse than from where it started. Cars arent allowed nor haven’t been allowed on the city hall roof for decades, yet they paved it for cars. And rather than secure the walls as they were originally, they bolted on visible fasteners.

Over the years various city councils just couldn’t resist messing with Nathan Phillips Square. Either by adding clutter, eg. the TORONTO sign, or missing golden opportunities as Nightstreak pointed out regarding the ramp. I’m perhaps only one of a few people that wishes the elevated walkway was removed a few years ago when the square was renovated. It acts as a barrier rather than an inviting space, but that’s an argument that runs deep and has been debated for decades.

It's amazing how quickly the city can get its act together when we have major events (ie: Pan Am Games and FIFA).

But at all other times, it takes eons to get everything done no matter how simple it may be.

The bureaucracy in this city will never cease to amaze.

We won the bid back in 2018. There's been 8 years to prepare.
