What vote on this are you all anticipating in the next 4 years?
That‘s indeed the question here, as even the Conservatives had promised to stick to the Liberals‘ timeline, which was to kick the can (i.e., the „final investment decision“) down after at least one more election (due in 2029)…

One would expect a round of consultation or two before very long, and some sort of EA. That may shed some light on the plans.
I doubt any will happen until they have firmed up their alignment plans - or at least developed relatively final options. Maybe 2027 or late 2026? It's hard to imagine it's going to be much earlier than that.

And that certainly doesn't involve any votes in the House or Senate. Though nothing precludes a standing committee asking questions.

Are we really digging up and rehashing this age-old Anglo-Canada vs. Québec “holier than thou” debate again? All of your critiques of Québec are valid, but this just feels so…. 90s, like a rehash of all the old Anglo-Canadian grievances towards Quebec from a bygone era. If you replace the words “Quebec” and “CAQ” with “Canada” and “Liberal” in your post, it would almost sound like a word-for-word speech from Danielle Smith 😄😭 …. Just saying.

Like, can we get over these décades old partisan stereotypes and get back to transit and transportation in 2025? The élection is over, Alto Phase 2 is signed and moving ahead, and we now have an overall stable government that is actually supportive of passsenger rail transit. The Bloc, NDP, and Liberals all seem to be on board and on the same page on the Alto file. I don’t know about you guys, but I take that as a win.
I don’t think I am digging up anything from the 90’s, holy or not. And certainly not Danielle Smith. This is a comment on the present, with events rooted in the present, and the comment comes from slightly east of Quebec City.

What Quebec has is a government that may have a .limited life span, that certainly knows how to spend with no appreciable improvement to the provinces well being, and is trotting out the well worn actions and rhetoric seen time and time again.

It’s a bit late for the Habs this year, but there is always the season to come.

You are correct. My apologies.
No worries and it really helped my mental health to more focus on the positive developments and that’s where I slightly jealously look at how Toronto (and by extension: Ontario) puts their money where their mouth is and invests massively into its transit systems. It won’t earn them any best transit system titles (at least outside of North America), but I’m confident that in ten years from now, the GTHA will be a hot contender for being named the “most improved transit network”…

It is good to see red almost throughout the 4 major cities this goes through: Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City. That says this project should have good support to progress as fast as realistically possible. It would be nice to heard yearly updates on the project. This way it stays in the public view and shows something the government is doing.

Since the wish for „yearly updates“ has been expressed, I‘d like to share the slides of (so far) 19 different „citizen participation forums“, where the potential routings of the Frankfurt-Mannheim High Speed Rail Line have been presented, discussed and adjusted in the light of suggestions received from NGOs or individual citizens. The presentations are in German of course, but I‘ve summarized them (in English) in a spreadsheet, so that you have an idea of what is going on and can quickly find the often very detailed visuals, like this one:

If we were in Germany, this would be good.
But, we are in Canada. Hopefully we can get something on a regular basis on ALTO. For example, this update could be an outline of the process they are following and a timeline of it with what to expect every year.

I think this describes the federal impact assessment process that will be followed. My experience has been with Municipal Class EAs in Ontario, where part of the EA process includes assessing alignment & design options, with public input, and then selecting the option with the best trade off between cost and impacts. Here, the expectation seems to be that an alignment has been selected before the Impact Assessment starts and is presented as the Project Description, the impacts of which are then assessed.

If this is the case, design consultations will happen first and be recorded as input to the "Document any engagement activities to date that it has undertaken" step in Planning.

Trump and Carney are currently doing their press conference as I'm typing this comment.

Trump just ripped into the California HSR project in front of Carney. Explaining how it's gone wildly over budget. Said the government won't fund it anymore, and referred to it as "one of the stupidest projects ever", and suggested people just fly or drive between San Francisco and L.A.

I wonder if Carney was thinking about ALTO while Trump was going off on HSR.

He may have thought about line(s) into USA as part of a larger network. He now knows that won't happen while trump is in power.

I imagine Carney had bigger issues to think about, and was relieved that Trump was ripping on anything that wasn't Canada.

Perhaps Trump could endorse the 401 tunnel idea.

Of course. I'm not suggesting ALTO was top of his mind throughout the meeting. I'm just wondering if ALTO crossed his mind while Trump was ranting about the California HSR project.

Come on @crs1026, give me some more credit. I may be obsessed with trains, but I understand Carney has more pressing matters.

If anything I just wanted to point to the difference in thinking towards HSR between our two countries.
