The TL;DR is that the UCP has decided the province doesn't need to disclose contributions or gifts to politicians over $100.

What an awful decision.
It's about expenses. The Premier, ministers, deputy ministers, and ranking staff can run up the tab at taxpayers expense, and we no longer have any visibility on what they're spending our money on.

Aren't unreported expenses for which you are reimbursed not potentially a gift to yourself - and those you host - at the taxpayers' expense?
Yes, potentially. The lack of accountability certainly creates the opportunity for much more abuse in many different ways.

I suppose it is finally safe for them to have as many $16 glasses of orange juice as they want now, shielded from public scrutiny or judgement.

Yes but the battle, but not the war. Also, there is no valid urgency to have this referendum immediately except maybe for Smith's electoral convenience.

Well if the war is the actual referendum vote result, she will indeed lose that, too.

In the meantime, the other question going around with the Canada Proud group will already be wrapped up (hopefully with enough votes) making this other seperatist option a mute point since you can't have two questions on the same thing.

Yes hopefully, but as Brexit in the UK shows politically motivated referendums can be unpredictable.

Also it will be very hard for the other question to get enough signatures because of the higher threshold, Smith rigged that for her favoroured question too, but it could happen.
