A spur line from off the w valley line to this piece of land (and a bit further to the velodrome/ross shep/science centre would give this land real TOD potential. One can dream

Give me a break. Have you ever been to a European city? It’s tram after tram and branch lines all over the place. If we’re of the mindset that we can only have a max of one tram every 5 minutes then we’re doing this all wrong. Tons of capacity here.

As you so cleverly pointed out this is not Europe. I asked someone at one of the open houses what the minimum frequency would be for the Valley Line and he said 3 minute headway but that would play havoc with traffic something the city was not prepared to do.

Well I would need more evidence than just someone at an open house saying that. Makes zero sense. The trains running down 104 ave will largely flow with traffic and a spur line would splinter off around 124st most likely. The idea that this would bring ‘traffic havoc’ is laughable, sorry.
We can’t keep building full, stand-alone lines all the way dt every time we want to get transit out to a new corner of the city. Branch lines are a fact of life for any self respecting transit system, anywhere in the world. Another fact of life is that if you choose to live in the far flung ‘burbs, your car commute will get gradually get longer as the inner city densifies and gets more public infrastructure.

I agree that Westmount/Coronation/TELUS World of Science should be connected to the LRT (those, alongside Fort Edmonton Park, are the two major destinations I would like to see connected to the network). I just don't know if a spur of the VLW would be the best way to go, simply because as much as I don't like giving cars priority over transit, 124 st is a fairly narrow street, and a lot of the businesses there do rely a lot on parking, which is very limited. If you eliminate parking completely (which would be needed to have the LRT running above ground on 124 st), you'd probably hurt a lot of those businesses too much, and the LRT would probably take decades to make up for it. Not to mention that you'd have to completely close off 124 st from Stony Plain Rd to 111 Avenue for years to do it, which would further hurt businesses in the area.

I think the best way, if we were to do something of the sorts, would be to have it go up 142 St, instead. It's wider, more underutilized and would probably be cheaper, faster and easier to build

Now, the ideal scenario would be to have the high floor LRT go underground, on west Jasper Ave from Corona Station and up 124 st, but that's a pipe dream, unfortunately.

yeah I don't disagree there. Going up 124st would likely not work; 142st would be a better option.

Agreed, 124 is too small for an LRT, but let's remember the streetcar ran there (the number 5 follows the old streetcar line), so rail in that area is not unheard of.

That is very much true, but streetcars wouldn't solve the modern problem, as they'd have to run with traffic, so we'd have a whole lot of disruption for minimal benefits. Those were other times and, had we not taken the tracks out, I would 100% support the idea of bringing them back, but as of today, I just don't think it's beneficial at all.

A (pipe dream) would be underground rail, a more realistic and beneficial approach would be a branching of the VLW up 142, and I'd honestly run it up to Yellowhead, to serve North Glenora, Westmount, Dovercourt and Woodcroft as well.

I've always dreamt about an extended underground Capital Line west down Jasper Ave from Corona with a turn north at 124 Street to 107 Avenue and beyond. Could pop up above ground along the shared use path corridor north of Manchester Square and continue north.

I've always though that something like this for a central circulator would be great.

Below grade west under Jasper to 124st with it coming up above grade down the middle around 111ave north and then above grade north, then SE to reconnect with the Metro.

That would honestly give us access to a ton more amenities, retail, Superstore, CDN Tire along with far more F&B and literally could remove our only car from our garage.

Only change I'd make in this is having it go west to 142 st (maybe below grade on 111 Ave and the go above grade after that) on the grounds of adding Coronation and TWoS to the network
