Hegseth put out a new press policy that he wanted all news organizations to sign that made sure news that wasn't approved for release.

Only one who signed it so far was ONN, a right-wing news organization. Even FOX didn't sign off on it, as of last night anyways.

Yes, essentially all of my wife's friends and family live in greater NYC and my dear Laura is from there, accent and all (it is a real treat for me to watch it (the accent spiced with some attitude) come out in full glory after a few glasses of wine). I love walking the streets of Manhattan and the East River riverfront in Brooklyn.
Has she made you a bacon, egg, and cheese yet?

^ Yes and I have reciprocated by making a delicious serving of Poutine for her avec les mots "je t'aime beaucoup" written on the serving napkin.

You are right in Newsom running, I kind of like Pritsker. But the way I am viewing this is the Repub are gearing up for a full on assault to voting so they may never get a chance to vote. JD Vance could be much worse if he gets power. At least The orange person is consistent in his direction and comments. The rhetoric is also get much darker. The Dems have not become a cohesive group, to many factions. At least the competing factions in the republican camp can get together at times. The no kings march coming up may be a flash point event that the Orange one will use. At least that is my uneasy feelings. We've seen the manipulation of the press and the media is not doing anything of real substance to refute it.
Pritzker and the Pennsylvania governor seem more solid to me. One of the good things about the US system is that being a governor does give a person a good opportunity to get some of the executive level experience needed to be President. In the past a number of governors have gone on to be president, as they can also still present themselves as outsiders.

Vance seems even less appealing than Trump to me. He may take over from Trump, being VP already gives him an advantage, but I don't see the same level of enthusiasm for him and being VP often hasn't led to political success after that.

CNN was playing the US Supreme Court hearing on the validity of Trump's tariffs this morning.

Trump's solicitor general is representing the government and the justices (even a couple of republicans) are really not buying the government's justification of using tariff powers as they are being used.

I would be shocked if this supreme court went against Trump but it sure seems like it's possible based on what I was hearing so far.

One of the big differences between the US and Canadian systems is there is really no official Leader of the Opposition. This can be both a disadvantage and an advantage.

It makes for less cohesiveness but it also gives the opposition to have a broader appeal with various representatives and messages. Interestingly, New York Mayor Mamdani and the two more moderate Governors were successful last night, so I feel it doesn't necessarily have to be either or, it can be both.

In the meantime, the Democrats have a year or two to find the person they want to lead them into the next election, who I also feel will have to be able to appeal to both.

The wall of invulnerability may be starting to crumble, and if it does I expect it to come down fast. Big if, though.

This is CNN, but their legal analyst, after how today's proceedings went, thinks the court will rule AGAINST the tariffs.

That opens a huge can of worms because how would all that tariff money be returned. Maybe it doesn't get returned, but it's an end to the tariffs which would be a significant win.

A big win for Canada and for ordinary Americans, although cynically you could argue that the court is trying to take away the gun that Trump is pointing at his foot.
