I know you all feel the same way and I'm preaching to the choir, but it always amazes me that these self-driving pod evangelists don't realize how inefficient it will be having these empty vehicles driving around to pick up clients. It would be a dramatic step backwards in the use of our existing infrastructure. Imagine how worse congestion will be if our roads have to accommodate both empty vehicles AND the existing nearly-empty private vehicles. It's like they were flabbergasted by a Tesla investor relations presentation 10 years ago and refused to ever think critically about what they were pitched since then. Who's willing to bet our writer, Mr Lang, has a large number of Tesla shares in his RRSP?

The easiest way to automate mass transit is to stick it on rails. If someone really believes rail transportation is dead, I urge them to think about why China is building such massive quantities of both regional and city rail system.

The same link also says
The agreement-in-principle will add 40 km of track and includes track re-alignments, signal upgrades, bridge work and platform expansions along with Kitchener Line.

When the work is completed, it will allow for 60-minute two-way, all-day service to Kitchener GO seven days per week. The government is also promising additional trains will be added during rush hour between Union Station and Kitchener GO in the mornings and evenings.
That's movement to all-day service (even if hourly). Exciting stuff!
