Bottom line is that I don't think that what we have now is a once every 2-year event. I'll get keen and run through all the data once they report the total depth - presumably tomorrow.

Well I didn't go through the Toronto data. But I noticed someone tweeted the Mississauga data from Pearson - which is very similar (though 1999 was much worse in downtown than Montreal.

So most snow depth since 1999. This isn't a once in every 2-year event. More like once a decade. And first time they've had to deal with that much snow along the outdoor subway sections since the new signalling system went in.

Two pof the civilian members of the Board have proposed this motion for the meeting next week. In general they seem to be suggesting quite useful things and it's encouraging to see Board members actually looking at service issues!

TTC2.13 - An Urgent Need to Improve Bus and Streetcar Travel Time and Reliability - by Commissioner Julie Osborne, seconded by Commissioner Fenton Jagdeo

Consideration Type: ACTION

Urgent - Urgent action is needed to improve the speed and reliability of all surface vehicles including and especially buses and streetcars in Toronto.

Recommendations

It is recommended that the TTC Board:

1. Affirm the position of the TTC Board that urgent prioritization of surface transit in the City of Toronto is crucial to improve travel times and reliability and to encourage transit use and help manage congestion; and that any changes to Toronto’s roadways contemplated by the City consider the impact on transit.

2. Request that City Council request the General Manager, Transportation Services, provide a report to the TTC Board on how transit travel times and reliability is prioritized in roadway design, decision-making, and operations and how we rethink the place that public transit occupies in this analysis.

3. Request that City Council request the Chief Planner and Executive Director, City Planning to report to the TTC Board how transit travel times and reliability are being prioritized in planning decisions and city-wide policy.

4. Request City Council in conjunction with the Toronto Parking Authority and the TTC evaluate the impact of dedicating scarce arterial road infrastructure to vehicles that are not moving, i.e. street parking. This analysis could include but not be limited to parking policy, parking alternatives, supply and pricing.

5. Request City Council to accelerate the implementation of RapidTO on priority corridors identified in the TTC’s 5-Year Service and Customer Experience Action Plan and provide resources to advance implementation of the Surface Transit Network Plan to provide a network of transit priority corridors to benefit transit riders across the entire city.

6. Forward this motion to the Toronto Region Board of Trade, Metrolinx, and the Ministry of Transportation, Ontario.

This one got me looking for the long lost Parking Strategy. I found it............ I don't remember this ever being out for public consultation..........it started, disappeared, I asked about it, it surfaced, it went away again, and it was quietly placed on the City's website.........in November.....it appears.

I will cross-post to the parking thread when I get a moment.

I need to read through this thing again....its not super long, but its convoluted, never say anything meaningful if you don't have to... LOL or at least bury it in bafflegab.

Uh...... I talked about the Queen's Quay priority lanes which have only had any real visibility for a few weeks.....and are set to be fully implemented by mid-May.

This is the way to make change.........nix long-winded consultations. Provide a narrow-window, on projects where you're concerned you might miss the impact of something, and you want to give the public a window to flag it. But otherwise, less talk, fewer graphics and meetings and just do.

In terms of this year, there are 3 potential deliverables.........they are not doing this work next year with FIFA going on.

- Bathurst and Dufferin as proposed to serve the Exhibition grounds; and Jane, where the work is substantially complete, but for for some details...but is stalled.

The interim CEO was on CBC this morning. They don't seem to post episodes or segments any more, so I can't link it. But it was just a whole lot of "it's not usually this cold" (false, it gets as cold as, or colder than this for a period every year), "we don't usually have this much snow" (partly true, we have it every couple of years) and "we're trying our best but we need to make sure everything is safe for our riders and that sometimes takes time" (partly true.. it is true that everything needs to be safe, but the trying our best part is what we are questioning).

Then the host threw him a bone by suggesting he's just been saddled by years of failing to do proper maintenance. Which of course he confirmed is true.

There was nothing in the interview to suggest they are trying to learn from teh experience and do better the next time there's a major snow storm. I assume they are, but it was a bit alarming that he never thought to even say that.

He should be fired.

It's not like the storm was a surprise. They knew it was coming. And instead of sitting on your hands doing nothing you could have stayed trains in the tunnels.

They could have used leaf blowers instead of shoveling by hand and continuing to run trains in open cut sections would have prevented some of these issues.

At least if they did those things and the system was down it would excusable.

I mean like hes been at the job for a bit under 6 months. he should be fired if he doesnt act quicky to prevent it in the future.

The rules in snow emergencies are codified:

For parallel parking, the rule is you must park within 30cm (1 ft) of the curb:

Most of "old" Toronto streets were built when the horseless carriages were smaller than today. Many people now are buying giant SUVs or pickup trucks (to carry home their backpacks) that take up more room on the streets. They park and take up much more space on the streets.

They might finally be doing it after 5 years of studying the idea?

Thanks. Good to see.

The plan for Jane is here:

Notable, cycling facilities did not make the cut. Neither did Queue jump lanes.

Red Transit lanes along most of the route, and some stop consolidation as well.

Estimated travel time reduction for the full segment above (local service) 8-9 minutes per direction.

Don't even bother with the red paint.

March starts this Saturday. Will the TTC keep its promise that the 510 streetcar will resume in March? Or will we have to endure more of the failed “bus priority lane” for even longer?

I guess you will find out in 6 or 37 days.
It's slipping my mind where I saw the details, but I believe the target date is one of either: March 22/23rd, or March 29/30th.

Definitely not the beginning of March though.
