Exactly. Reminds me of this incident from a couple years ago: Toronto subway stabbing victim recounts violent incident

The victim took it personally that a guy who was loudly playing music sat behind him, and when asking the guy to turn it down didn't work, he started arguing with the music playing guy and then started punching. Turns out the other guy had a knife and started stabbing him. I feel bad for the stabbing victim but damn, try not taking things so personally or even just moving down the train (it was on Line 1). Embolden people to fear others, "defend" themselves, allow for the carry of weapons, etc? Things will get ugly real fast.
Every so often I find myself wondering at what point in human history it became socially acceptable to behave like a snotty brat that doesn't care about anyone but themselves. You see this a thousand times daily in the form of a thousand micro shithead moves. Yelling at a shop clerk, putting your feet up on chairs outside of your own home, listening to music and videos without headphones in a public space... Why is this a thing and when did it become a thing?

It started the moment one discovered there is no cost to behaving badly.

And as I've mentioned before, the simplest solution to such annoyances is to wear noise cancelling headphones. Why do so many complain when an obvious solution is widely available?
So we are all to buy headphones while a few jerks disobey all transit systems bylaws related playing music and watching video's while on vehicles???? Who is paying for them???

Indeed, the irony that headphones were originally meant for someone to listen to music, rather than to not listen to it. 😆

I have purchased noise cancelling headphones.
Maybe my hearing is too good, but even those do not work. I can still easily hear these slobs screaming in their phones.
Maybe the real problem is we have normalised being a slob, and maybe that's why the TTC has declined.

With respect, this is actually a very bad solution.

If you have headphones on that are good enough to eliminate most or all ambient noise, you just made yourself a mark.

I'm astounded daily at this and watching the risks that ensue, not only from headphones/earbuds but also people just buried in their phone, while walking.

Its not merely that you look like easy prey for a criminal, its that you can't hear the oncoming vehicle when you're stepping into the road, its you're obliviousness to the cyclist in the bike lane, or to the person worker who dropped something off the edge of a construction site yelling 'look out below'.

You need to be aware of your surroundings, accidents happen, fires, other emergencies and criminal behavior. I know someone who got mugged in a popular, 'safe' park in Toronto, thing is, he had headphones on, was on a bench, and immersed in his phone...he was made for a mark and got hit from behind and his bag taken.

He was a victim, not at fault, and the offenders were ultimately arrested...... for all of that, he would have preferred not to be a victim.

Socially problematic behavior at an individual level can be addressed, or ignored, as the situation dictates.

Socially problematic behavior at a societal level (frequent problem), requires societal intervention.

The TTC already has By-Law number one with these applicable components:

Its simply a matter of sufficient enforcement to correct bad habits:

Also, sound cancelling headphones only provide a "solution" to one type of the asocial behaviours I was complaining about. They don't solve people putting their feet up on chairs or throwing temper tantrums at cashiers, or basically any type of asocial behaviour that doesn't involve the playback of sounds from one's device.

That section is essentially a trench plus you have the third rail to worry about.

I suspect they are having a hard time clearing it out.

I'm aware of what this section looks like.........nothing new there........

The weather was not a surprise, the TTC could have been out clearing this section overnight, the weather is fine this morning.

It looks like the wind and blowing snow dropped off about 4 AM this morning.

My guess would be that since this is the first major storm since they put in the new signalling system, that they are dealing with technical issues and damage.

Certainly possible, we'll have to wait to hear details.

But my patience w/the TTC's operational challenges has been pretty much exhausted. They had rush hour shut downs on back to bad days on Line 2 last week, evening rush the one day, then morning rush the next.

They also had Line 2 service suspended yesterday from VP to Kennedy.

Its hard to keep up with everything they can't manage to operate.

As a cyclist I can confirm this ill is pervasive throughout this city, headphones or not, and I'm afraid it won't go away anytime soon.

Have you tried blindfolds? 😆
