The complaint isn't the view of the escarpment, it's the view from the escarpment - where extra tall buildings would block the view of much of the downtown area and the harbor.
It does this at 30 stories. It was a bullsh*t excuse because some rich people on the Durand Neighborhood Association made a stink/slid some money into someone's pockets to have the limit implemented. Which is funny, because the city recently let go of that planning department employee for history of taking bribes while working at another municipality.

Would have been nice to have some 45 or 50 story buildings.

It's true. Tall buildings would block views from the escarpment. As would many buildings close to the escarpment. I would say anything north of Hunter should be considered to "enhance" the view. We all know people don't always agree on aesthetics and that's ok but if you want to develop your property that can fit two towers at 30 storeys you should be allowed to develop it at 40 and 20 storeys. Or Design District could have been 15, 30 and 45 or any combination.

Hamilton used to be the 5th largest city in Canada. It’s definitely time for it to get some taller skyline defining towers 🙌

And there are also multiple other sites that are in the prepping stage that they are talking about launching as rentals before year ends question for somebody with a lot more knowledge than me if a building starts as a rental under construction and the market picks up Is it possible for developer to reconvert it before it is finished and sell those units

There have been two 30-storey starts this year.. potentially another 1 or 2 before the year is out.

It’s not as dead as you are portraying it, led by rental starts.
Additionally, seven 25+ storey towers have been constructed since 2016. Ten to eleven 25+ storey towers is satisfactory to good.

If we reduce it to 15+ storey tower completions since 2016, the number rises to 17. 20 buildings downtown in ten years is a boom.

15-storey building completions since 2016:
  • 10 Bay Residence (10 Bay St S) – 30 stories (2023)
  • 150 Main Street West – 15 stories (2018)
  • 1 Jarvis (1 Jarvis St) – 15 stories (2024)
  • 75 James Street South – 34 stories (2026)
  • Acclimation Condos (181 James St N) – 16 stories (2019)
  • Apex Condos (235 Main St W) – 23 stories (2026)

Apex has not been constructed

It’s also counted Cobalt, which became The King William, and gotten the storeys wrong to boot. Apparently the precast monstrosity at 220 Cannon East has been teleported to 220 George (???), and given three storeys it doesn’t have (it’s actually 12). None of the City Square phases rise higher than 11 storeys. Acclamation at 16 storeys is farcically wrong, it has half that. Didn’t count the LiUNA student residence on James at Rebecca at 20 storeys, either.

Great showing from our technological saviour, indeed…
