The newest renderings do not look like they would facilitate a year round venue. The old renderings had what looked like large accordion doors that could close off the venue. Is it still going to be a year round facility?
Construction is supposed to start next year, so, better get on it then.FWIW, all the stories say the intention is still to supposedly rebuild it to be a year-round venue, as announced about four years ago.
I would assume any renderings are just illustrative vague artistic concepts, not an actual planned design they're going to start moving forward with any time soon.
It is? Where did you read or hear that?Construction is supposed to start next year, so, better get on it then.
There is also going to be a temporary venue built during the renos.
From what I understand, the temporary venue isn't separate. It's the main venue opening temporarily for the 2029 summer season before they close back down for the rest of the renovations. So there will be no 2028 concert season here.
The company said the amphitheatre will close in the fall of 2027 for renovations. It will reopen in two stages: first in the spring of 2029 as an outdoor venue, and then in the summer 2030 with year-round hosting capabilities.
Live Nation said it will soon announce a temporary venue that will host shows while the amphitheatre is closed.
I might be reading the article wrong but here's an excerpt that made me think there's a separate venue:
This will require an almost two-year closure of the venue for renovations from fall 2027 to summer 2029, when it will reopen as a temporary summer-only concert venue as renovations continue into the following year.
I don't see anything yet that explains what or where the presumed temporary summer 2028 venue would be.
But Live Nation already operates a temporary outdoor venue in Downsview for at least four more years, through 2029.
The current Downsview capacity of 50,000 makes it incompatible as a direct replacement for the 16,000-capacity RBC Amphitheatre, but it could probably be reconfigured to be smaller and used more frequently for one summer.
I'm not sure how expensive or practical it would be, but I wonder if it could be possible to have the Downsview stage be movable in a north-south direction with rails. A huge festival in 1974, California Jam, had separate moving stages, although this would appear to have involved moving in a sideways direction, and apparently also the main speakers and lighting system being stationary.
(The idea was to cut down on the time to switch the stage over from one band to the next. It worked so well that they got ahead of schedule, until Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple caused a long delay by locking himself in his trailer and refusing to go on stage until sunset.)
Conveniently also sponsored by RBC!It’s almost certainly going to be at Echo Beach where Live Nation hosts Digital Dreams and the drive in theatre.
