Can anybody who knows help me understand why they’ve temporarily filled this all in and are building it up with gravel when they need to remove the western section of the bridge and are also building station entrances at ground level? Both would require removing all this land mass so I’m super confused why they’re building it up!?
I had assumed they would be building the west side similar to the eastern portion which necessitated a full and complete dig out of several levels below ground surface!??! Super confused why they’re adding all this material when it will need to be removed to build the station entrances and also to remove the bridge like they just did at eastern ave? 🫠🫠🫠 Seems like double the work and would like to understand the why? Thanks!

Not sure why they've built up either end of the bridges, but it looks like the bridge will be demolished at the end of February according to this most recent construction schedule.

Could be built up for construction vehicle access or for pre-loading?
Nope they had trucks driving along it for the last few months….my only hypothesis is that they somehow need this height to pour the footings for the future station? Either that or the contractor just wants to charge to do duplicative work lol

Not sure if I'm missing something or this was done in error, but according to this document, the Queen Street closure in 2 weeks is to install girders for the 2nd half (north/west section). With the existing support structure still in place, are they just building on top of it instead of demolishing first? Seems like an odd choice.

Turns out this weekend's girder installation was for the gap between the old & new sections of bridge. So the demolition of the old (north/west) section will be coming eventually.

I walked under the bridge on Sunday.

The new part is raised a few feet above the old section, giving the underpass a breezier, less dank feeling. It'll be incredible when the old section is demolished. Hopefully there are also some improvements to lighting and the pedestrian experience.

Hey all - apologies for the repetition but really curious to know if anybody can explain why Metrolinx built up Degrassi soooo high over the last month and are now cutting it back down… there must be someone who can explain why they’ve near doubled the height of the western portion and within a month are cutting it down? This adjoining portion of the Queen St bridge needs to be removed so why fill it up only to have to remove it again? The approach that’s being taken at Eastern Ave makes total sense as they’ve cut the adjoining portions out as well as the bridge… this stretch is being done very differently and doesn’t seem to make sense…?

In the middle part that they installed girder beams at about a month ago, it struck me as interesting how they didn't do any demolition, or preparation on the retaining walls on the sides... Does anyone know if ML has any plans for this area?
