The Dominion? I used to go there with my mom in the '80s to rent a carpet cleaner. But for several years we bought groceries at the No Frills that was on the west side a couple blocks north (as the store was on an incline, it had ramps to the parking lot). And for several years there was a Future Shop directly north of the No Frills.
Strange how humdrum childhood experiences become fond memories.
I don’t think anyone is dying over memories with mom.

I doubt given our weather that malls will be the ones that die out. It’s plazas and big box stores first.
I mean if you completely ignore the last 15 years of retail trends, sure. Unfortunately the reality is the opposite - retail has spent the last 15 years shifting from malls to plazas.

People want quick in and out services in retail, which means plazas. Malls are more of a 'spend an afternoon shopping" type activity which consumers are increasingly avoiding in favour of online shopping. What they still do in person is more plaza-format supportive.

do you have any data to support yours statements. Has plazas and big box stores become a thing in the last 20 years. Sure they have. But they are all on land managed by people just waiting for the land to be valuable enough to be worth developing on. There’s a reason big box stores are built so cheaply. They are temporary and were not made to be there in 50 years.

Not all malls will survive. We can see honeydale and woodbine mall are examples of that. But there are plenty of malls which are doing perfectly fine.

we all know Yorkdale is the top mall in Canada by sales per square feet. Square one and Scarborough town centre have both improved. Oxford has done well in the gta. https://renx.ca/oxfords-gta-malls-break-sales-records

Ranked by sales per square foot, ICSC’s annual rankings spotlight the top 25 Canadian shopping centres, which includes 13 CF shopping centres in 2023:

  • CF Toronto Eaton Centre
  • CF Pacific Centre
  • CF Richmond Centre
  • CF Chinook Centre
  • CF Sherway Gardens
  • CF Carrefour Laval
  • CF Masonville
  • CF Rideau Centre
  • CF Market Mall
  • CF Polo Park
  • CF Fairview Mall
  • CF Markville Mall
  • CF Fairview Pointe Claire

So unless you believe one of the top 25 malls is going to cease to exist I would think your assessment isn’t accurate. You see that Fairview is two below Ottawas version of Eatons Centre. That should tell you it’s perfectly fine and there are plenty of people who still like the mall experience.

This is pretty on brand for him.
The joke originated with people wanting to save a parking garage because they had good memories there. I joked that I am sure those memories they were trying to preserve were wholesome kosher experiences we all had in high school when we didn’t have a room with a view. A few pages later someone mentions a parking garage with their mom. And I thought they missed out on the joke. My bad for being on brand. So sorry all of urbantoronto community. FYI I love my mom and no I do not care for parking garages despite having spent some time there as a teenager.

Well, I apologize for calling you a jackass, sixrings. Perhaps it was an overreaction. My interpretation of your remark was that I should be embarrassed to have fond childhood memories, and that loving one's mom and dad is "super-lame". I think you did not mean it that way.

Thank you for understanding. I did not mean it that way and I hope my kids have those types of things to say about me.
