Re: Celebrate Toronto Street Festival Eliminated!

Perhaps the Toronto festival can generate a different kind of laughter than the Montreal laughter festival generates? Cruel laughter, sardonic laughter or laughing-through-the-tears laughter? We could remake the whole concept of laughter in our own image, and leave old fashioned Montreal-generated laughter in the dust. The world will learn to laugh anew.

Re: Celebrate Toronto Street Festival Eliminated!

Having helped midwife the whole SNL-and-onward school of comedy, Toronto's already done its leaving-Montreal-in-the-dust part, arguably.

Maybe it's that the whole concept of a *festival* is corny and contrived? In the land of TIFF and Znaimer and the McLuhan legacy, it'd be practically like folkloric regression...

Re: Celebrate Toronto Street Festival Eliminated!

Is it just me, but doesn't anyone find it sad that Toronto is giving up a festival that is celebrating itself in favour of another city - Montreal???

It's originally a Montreal event, but I don't see why it wouldn't be considered a "Toronto" event.

There was huge public and media uproar when Miller last proposed to cut the Street Festival from the city's budget.

The whole approval process just seems really sneaky and done without any public consultations. How about the businesses at those intersections?

I doubt that this new festival will continue the multiple venue concept on Yonge Street.

June is still a number of months off. Maybe they'll still find a way to save it.

Re: Celebrate Toronto Street Festival Eliminated!

All mention of the Street Festival has been removed from the city's Special Events Page.

It's gone alright.

Re: Celebrate Toronto Street Festival Eliminated!

I stumbled across the CTSF a couple times and my impression was that it had no heart, didn't look fun, and overall seemed kinda pointless. Won't miss it. Comedy usually isn't funny to me but I think it'll be a bigger draw.

The Celebrate Toronto Street Festival never celebrated Toronto as far as I was concerned. It celebrated Shopper's Drug Mart or any other name your corporation. I'm not being anti-corporate here, just stating that there was nothing idisyncratic to Toronto about that festival. There was no heart and no purpose to the event. The choice of programming could have had the festival dropped into Winnipeg and nobody would have known the difference. Celebrating comedy (including local comedians) seems more Torontopia than the CTSF ever was. While I don't foresee how this means we are "celebrating Montreal," I do however think we could learn a few things from La Ville about how to run street festivals.

Re: Celebrate Toronto Street Festival Eliminated!

The TSO performing in the middle of Yonge Street, just north of St.Clair, is a memory I'll always treasure.
