...there is another excavation dig on the north side of Line 2 here where they will likely build the other part of this project, then connect the two up over Line 2...at which they will then build the tower on top of that, to my understanding. So they are there for potential load bearing purposes to make this happen...if that makes any sense.

Yep — those columns are going to tie to the slab that will be suspended over the TTC tunnel.

Keskus did something similar with their cultural centre under construction next to this, but much more at grade level. But essentially these are bridges built over the Line 2 tunnel so that structure doesn't take any of the those respective building loads. But they are bridges we wont really be able to notice when all is said and done here. As Spock used to say, "fascinating"...
