...don't ask me, I'd have all the sidewalks meet up in the middle of the street. And I just know how well that would go down at Queen's Park. /sigh

In 2021/22 I spent a week each in Montreal and Vancouver. At first, I couldn't really figure out why many of their downtown streets felt nicer than ours. Then it finally dawned on me - they have trees, often mature ones rather than the scrawny, often half-heartedly-planted trees that grace many of our downtown commercial streets (if they exist at all). What's wrong with us? Perhaps our city planners / politicians fear the wrath of infamously tight-fisted taxpayers who consider trees as unnecessary frills?
 
Well it's only recently that they have put trees in the position to not die off immediately after planting. Even still, it's quite difficult for a tree to survive downtown.

@picard102 is correct above. Toronto used to put its street trees mostly in tiny concrete boxes with barely 3m3 of soil. They had an average lifespan of 7 years.

Today, and for the last many years, the majority of new street tree plantings have to be in 30m3 of soil, at least with temporary and often with permanent irrigation. We're already seeing a huge difference.

Look at the size and health of these along York at Bremner:

It will take awhile to correct for past mistakes.

As to Yonge in this area, trees are contemplated as part of the overhaul of the street.........hopefully later this decade..........(fingers crossed) (just peaked.... currently penciled in for 2030)
